April 6, 2015 at 10:22 am in reply to: Element 3D… Why doesn’t it look like the preview window?Hi; I’m just having the same problem; I use E3D V2. I set my whole combination of objects in E3D preview, everything is ok and fine for me; I press OK to return to my fresh comp in AE and here I am with my E3D combination completely in a different place and if for any reason I have to go back to E3D after having adjusted in AE the elements, when I come back to AE after the alteration again everything is messed up. This is the case whether I link my camera or not to a group null in E3D.
Where is the flaw; what should be done? It messes everything in particular when you try to move the camera in AE; you have to set up again all your key frames! And it is horribly time consuming!

You could check Video copilot for their Heat distortion plugins. And you have also this link which implies buying the effect or footage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZOHansLZdw

March 28, 2015 at 10:42 am in reply to: Import materials with an obj sequence for use with Element 3d?Hi David,
I’ve just found this website which eventually may be of some use for you if you want to use an obj model in E3D independently of your skills in developing your own; I was looking for a doric frieze for my temple columns. What is nice is that the textures were uploaded with the obj file (not sure it’s always the case for all of them). https://sketchfab.com/ .

Honestly I can’t answer the question. I’m rather new with E3D and AE. I’m not a professional by an amateur video maker making mostly videos of my trips in particular my hikes in the Grand Canyon. I’m presently on a project gathering in 45 to 60 minutes different trips I made to Pompeii and Herculaneum and I wrote a little script which is a kind of fantastic story of aliens arriving in the ruins and being welcomed by one of the victims of the eruption who comes back to life and serves them as a guide in the sites. Each time they approach a major location it turns out like it was before the catastrophe, hence this model of the Temple of Jupiter which is part of the Forum where I’m going to have 212 columns around it!!!!!I had the problem with the 2 colors on the column and a guy on the forum explained I should use a 3 parts column instead of one whole column as the E3D is incapable of doing it otherwise. When I tried I had the column either full red or full yellow! So my whole temple is made of a huge number of pieces and as said earlier to have them all at the same time I used only one group. I have not checked yet the paper I found about the channels etc.
To be honest I find that the documentation given on the VideoCopilot site for E3D a bit short; for instance what are the units used in the size parameters, what reference is used when the sizes are expressed in % ? % of what? I’ve put a question on the forum there and got no answers. I’ll send a message to Andrew Kramer because it can be important especially in a case like mine where there are strict proportions to respect architecturally speaking. All the measures of the temple and columns are a function of the diameter of the column, even the space between two of them, and it varies whether you’re in the Ionic or Doric style!
Thank God I have time being retired from my financial profession! But for someone for which this is a full time job, time is money and the customer will not wait for you to have the answer!
If I get news, I’ll contact you; you can also send me a private message I’ll be glad to answer with my very limited knowledge.

March 24, 2015 at 7:35 pm in reply to: Element 3D V2 Difference between channels and groups?Hi David,
I hope the answer I gave you the other day was of some help.
As for your question “In fact I haven’t been able to see all the objects at once if they are within different groups.”When I built my temple, I put all my different elements in the same group as to have them together and be able to adjust their position relative one to the other in the preview panel. Otherwise as you say you have to go to each group or position them in AE after going out of E3D and it is not very easy to do so because of the perspective problems which I find worse than in the E3D panel.
For the remaining of your question I have no answer but I have found this link that may be of some help, I have just looked at it quickly: https://www.cgchannel.com/2014/12/video-copilot-unveils-element-3d-v2/

When you import in E3D an object the textures are not imported. In that case you have to import separately the different elements of the texture (diffuse, normal; etc…Here is a series of pictures of how I do it in one of my models.1/ Here the main part of the column have no textures. The main column (all are similar and copies) is highlighted in blue in the scene column of the project
Collapse the little arrow and the different parts of the model appear. When you click on one of them in the edit column near the main preview screen you can see at the top the different parameters to fill or select.
When collapsed you can see the different elements of my columns the one highlited in blue corresponds to the texture of this part of the column actually white and bare.
2/ Go to the edit column near the preview panel and on the texture element choose “diffuse” and click on it. a new panel opens where you can upload your texture and decide how the uv will appear.Do the same for the elements if you have them. Before finishing check that all the little squares are blue indicating that they are live and visible.
I hope I’ve been clear. Don’ hesitate to contact me if there’s something you did not understand.(Take into account the time difference, I’m in Paris-France not USA!lol!)

Thanks Graham; I’m still struggling with Shatter in AE. I thought of using Cinema 4 D lite in AE but things are not clear to what commands are not available to use their shatter solution. There’s a good youtube tutorial but simulation and collide are missing in the lite edition delivered with AE. I’m not a petroleum magnate to pay for the full version! Just an amateur trying to make an original video for his own pleasure. May be your idea is the right thing to do. I must say as I remarked to Mylenium of the Adobe staff, I just can’t understand that such an obvious situation has not been implemented although Adobe is not the author of the effect. When a building crumbles debris do not vanish into thin air!He told me to put gravity to 0! That would bring the most ridiculous situation! I imagine the poor guy who got crushed by one of the temple’s column looking above him to it suspended in the air!
His skeleton was found during the excavations in Pompeii ! -
Hi Graham,
I suppose since you last posted on this subject you have solved your problem.I’m just an amateur non professional and trying to achieve the same result as the one you were looking for.
My video project concerns my different trips to Pompeii and Herculaneum which I try to gather on a short subject inspired by the French writer Théophile Gautier’s novel “Arria Marcella”. The idea being that alien visitors arrive in the ruins and meet a victim of the 79AD eruption who will serve them as a guide and each time they arrive at a major location in the ruins, those come back to their original splendor. My video begins with the eruption and among others shots I have the Temple of Jupiter on the forum crumbling because of the earthquake tremors parallel to the eruption.
I thought of using shatter effect but as you mention here the pieces disappear instead of staying on the ground.
I’ve checked different tutorials on the web, asked on different forums without any result.
If you succeeded to solve the problem would it be asking too much how you did it.
As you may imagine as an amateur it’s out of question for me to invest in costly addons like Particular and others. I use the Adobe suite CC and Element 3D from Videocopilot and DAZ studio 3D. I’ll try to understand how to use the lite version of Cinema 4D which is accessible via AE. Moreover I’m rather new with AE.
My project has no commercial aim whatsoever. I just want to make something original for my private use, eventually posting it on youtube or Vimeo for friends to see but with downloading restrictions.
I’m a senior retired banker. Editing and video are just a hobby.
Hoping not to take too much of your time
