Dan, as much as I enjoy a good joke, I would hate to see you get fired over this, there are enough good people out of work these days. The J30 is a player, what Bob is saying, is that you cannot buy a J30 to record to, you will get fired, because… well… It doesn’t record… Got the picture?

This is like me asking my wife – “do I put my dirty clothes in the washer or dryer”.
It’s more like “Should I put these dirty clothes in the washer or the oven!” LOL
The J-30 VTP’s are great for dubbing to, although I think they should take the plunge and invest in MII decks 🙂

Here’s a helpful guide from Belden on cable specs and maximum recommended lengths.

In addition to Bob’s insightful post (I’m glad you approve of the 400A Bob as I am taking delivery of one any day now), I wanted to add a couple of things. I am using the Belden ENG. A/V cable, made up on reels of slightly less than 300′ so that the total length from my JVC 250 to my 400 switcher is fewer than 300′ after the patch panel and rack cabling.
Here’s my suggestion, since you have the exact same equipment as me, and I would be interested to see if Bob has any issues with my setup?
I am using the Belden A/V cable, not sure who else sells it, but I got mine from Joseph Electronics. It has 2 1505 coax and four XLR’s. This is perfect as you can also send sync or time code to the camera if needed. The 4 XLR’s give you your intercom, as well as milking your on-board microphone etc…
AND…I have been working on an awesome upgrade for controlling the 250 by remote… I purchased the RM-LP55 controllers along with 300’ security camera (6 pin din) cables. You do however need to modify the remotes to run off of a 9 volt battery (I can tell you more if you are interested) But once you do you can control your IRIS, master black, white balance, etc… Without spending $10k a camera to purchase a studio interface, 26 pin cables, and a CCU.
My next project is to find a way to tap into the 10 pin “studio plug” on the 250 so I can send the tally’s from the 400a switcher to the tally lights built in to each camera.

Any chance this was NewsProNet? The only reason I ask, is that they are Georgia based, and have screwed myself and several others out of payment for shoots.

…And whatever you do, DON’T bother to ask those questions of someone in sales. You need to contact someone such as an engineer or an operations manager. I’ve dealt with TOO many people in production or sales who will just answer you with the standard “Beta SP”, when chances are the operations people will tell you which format THEY PERFER. That way you stay on their good side if they don’t have to make a dub or screw around when ingesting your program every week.

Hey Frank, how do you like the 400? I am planning on picking one up myself soon, and I was going to go with the datavideo system, as they seem to be the only ones to sell the all-in-one solution.
The only other thing I can suggest is what we did at a little TV station I once worked at. I’ll put it this way, you need a power supply, an enclosure, and connectors from Radio Shack, then you need to go to a truck stop where you’ll find dozens of types of 12 volt lights, and pick the one the looks best for your setup.

Hey Mark do you remember the “Max Headroom Incident”? That has to be one of my favorite Chicago T.V. stories. It was 20 years ago this last November that someone overpowered the STL’s of both WGN and WTTW and aired some bizarre scene of a guy wearing a Max Headroom mask getting spanked with a fly swatter!… Even 20 years later there are ops guys patching porno into the Super Bowl…Somethings never change! LOL

I am about to buy a cheaper type of meter bridge on sale from Markertek. It has RCA in’s so I was going to take an 1/8″ output from the sound card, adapt to RCA’s and generate tone until I get the meters “dialed in”

Bob, I am about to start that exact process myself soon, do you have any sources for more info about that workflow? Thanks.
