break it down into what you want to do. the blue is @50MB/sec r/w speed so fast enough for small proxies. an older 4 core won’t be able to do much except proxies anyways. the 980TI is not bad. I wouldn’t invest in tons of super fast hard drives until I had a faster processor. It’s just a waste of money. Instead, proxy all your stuff and get a larger cheap evo, or raid some cheap blue’s. RED at 1/16th scale may do realtime playback, and only 5ghz can playback h.264 stuff anyways.

to put it in perspective, even the $1,000 processors cannot do realtime playback any better than the 7700k I-7.
That’s the sweet spot for playback. The faster clocks and more cores are just faster at exporting. According to the chart, you can playback up to 8 video stream simultaneously with RED with an EVO. There’s just no data backup from RAID.

  • i see your point. as an addendum; “a particular desired look can be further magnified or ‘exaggerated’ by a longer lens, not directly de-focused by it.” I just didn’t want the OP to get confused by technical vs artistic photography. if it looks good, then its right.

download free technical clog luts here; transformed to premiere compatiblility

or roll your own and edit lut in notepad and change the top line “LUT_3D_INPUT_RANGE 0.0 1.0” into a comment by adding a # sign (so it becomes #LUT_3D_INPUT_RANGE 0.0 1.0).

sometimes renaming to .mpg works. but the real problem will probably be the audio as some is ac3 and may not work directly inside premiere without transcoding with a 3rd party program. Since you’re CS6 and don’t have true proxy mode, I recommend a full offline proxy like cineform which allows smoother playback. test your workflow all the way through to make sure it works.

  • a longer lens only magnifies blur through visual compression, doesn’t make it ‘stronger’. the lil bokeh gets enlarged, not softer. a common misconception.

  • to paint with light in post-production:

    1. apply the mid contrast with duplicate overlay, blending to let shadows through.
    2. apply curves with mask for fill light.50% opacity
    3. for key light, adjustment layer-saturation at 0 set to color dodge.(acts like a fresnel) 20% opacity
    4. finally, bring back color modeling with levels-white output set to color. opacity 20%

if you do these steps in this exact order, you will have very natural looking lighting. most people don’t do these steps and simply raise gamma, making everything look unnatural.

    another thing, 4k 4:2:0 will key better than 1080 10bit 4:2:2.
resolution does win out with chromakey even if the colour information is a bit lacking as with 4:2:0.

it depends if the color is burned in via utility color profile converter or was simply assigned in metadata.
metadata gets ignored in premiere. you should compare it against AE/photoshop for quality control.
