    hdr is 1000 nits by definition. in photoshop, assign color profile then view show gamut warning. you can select what color is warning. you then increase saturation until warning colors show.

  • the cineform codec is now open source; it will be around much longer than variants of h.264/dnxhd will. I agree to keep originals. that being said, you can get 8TB for like $180 now, lol.

    in transcoding, you look at the psnr number ie. generational loss.

    only a really low quality proxy file would be too low to grade on. by default, all exports use the original file.

    if you went full offline(aka deleted all original footage), a level 5 cineform psnr is good for many generations of transcoding with no visual loss of quality. 4:4:4 filmscan mode level 5 is good for over 10 generations.

    a cheap platter like a wd blue. if you select a high quality cineform for a proxy, it can act like a full offline version good enough for grading, i.e. level 4 or 5.

    you could save money if you keep your original footage on a cheap platter and your proxy transcoded cineform on a SSD. it would only be slow if you turned off your proxies. and again, a platter won’t slow down an export; just a thought.

    above and beyond the 45GB/hour 100mbps h.264 drone footage, for smooth editing you will also need a proxy format.

    you can expect high quality cineform to be anywhere from 40GB/hour-300GB/hour depending on quality and resolution. or you can go the really small low quality proxy route with DNxHR LB at only 14GB/hour.

    so add the two together 45+(40-300) or 45+14 is 1.4 – 8 hour’s worth. not including the media cache which can get almost as big, so divide your final numbers in half if you don’t have a separate drive for cache, so .7 – 4 hour’s worth.
    not including extra sfx, music, effects etc another 20% or so down to .28-1.6 hour’s worth.

    if you shoot one day a month, its enough. then transfer to a slow platter for archiving and delete your media cache per project.

    there is no speed advantage to breaking up the Project & Source Media and Media Cache & Scratch into 2 SSD’s, although down the road you will probably run out of hd space from media cache and its cheaper than a 4TB SDD.

    If you have a small amount of footage, you can start off with one SSD and buy another when needed. delete the cache from older projects and move the data to a WD blue.

    Exporting will be cpu bottlenecked anyway so you can save export space from not using SDD there and using slow platter for exports.

    none of this takes into account data backups. You should have more backups of drives in difference physical locations.

    your money would go a lot farther with a 860 evo. 960 evo is overkill. you’re not going to see a speed difference with the 960 evo. h264 is interframe compressed and your cpu will bottleneck long before your hard drive will.

    As a matter of fact, drone footage is 100mbps. divide by 8 to get MB/sec is only 12.5 MB/sec. You’re currently not even saturating your platter drive! If you want smooth editing, you need to transcode to cineform first. it is intraframe and less compressed but needs a faster hd because of the larger file size. But if you feel better with a m.2, its your money.

    a 1TB 860 evo is $289
