    Deinterlacing quality all depends on your budget. We’ll start at $0 and go from there.

    sorenson squeeze is all you’ll ever need to know. It can do half-frame rate tricks and super compress with still better quality than anything else out there.

    if you are talking about just ‘keying’ out the lens flare, then all you need is a free effect called unmult.

    download it and install it. then apply the lends flare to a black (must be black) solid, then apply unmult.

    the flare will now be on a transparent background (click the checker board button to see). when you render, render as lossless with alpha, setting the colors to millions+, rgb+alpha and straight (unmatted). this will give you a ‘keyed’ mov to take into premiere.

    I forgot to add, if you want lossless codec encoding, then you can try quicktime’s jpeg 2000, 20% better than regular mjpeg.

    Always capture VHS with interlaced lines. The best res is 640×480 interlaced top field. That keeps all the quality during capture but your actual pixels are only 320×240. Your next step is upscaling which you don’t have very many options. You can try stretching footage into dvd comp size 720×480 or stay low rez like I think 352x? is smallest you can go for dvd compatibility. Another option is hd upscale from red giant software. It uses bicubic filtering with antialiasing to smooth intelligently the sides without degredation. Any good bicubic resizing like virtualdub is free but not quite as good.

    Both Mac and PC can play Quicktime 7 codecs. That would be a good choice for universal playback. Try h.264. It can keep excellent quality and small file sizes. If you set it right, you can hardly tell differences between uncompressed and h.264 except that you can play h.264 on old computers smoothly. They use h.264 for a lower quality blue ray too. Mpeg2 is highest blue ray at 40 kbps. Youtube is also converting all its video to h.264. It’s like mpeg4 on steroids but can have DV quality. or try quicktime DV. I don’t know what your original footage is, but streaming always means quality vs time downloading. Your call. fyi. if your burning dvd’s or blu ray, then go mpeg2 highest dvd 8 mbps/dvd or blue ray mpeg2 40kbps.
    mpeg2 does not look good at low bitrates. Use h.264 is you’re going that route. To compare and decide and save time, render out 40 frames or so and decide before spending 4 hours encoding undesired outpout. Hope this tidbit helps.

    HDV cameras cannot, by tape capture definition, do any reverse pulldown. Sorry that you don’t know that. Once they hit a tape and not a HDMI cable directly to computer, they blow up from 4:2:2 to 4:2:0 and chroma goes bye bye. Interlaced footage becomes blured, smirred, and melted into opposing scanlines. They create holes, gaps, and interlacing artifacts that are unusable for keying. You need pure progressive or un-artifacting transfers on digital cards or HDMI black magics.

    the hard drive cannont transfer the video information fast enough.
    It’s normal. uncompressed can be useless for playback on un-godlike systems. That’s why they invented raid cards and render farms.
