There are a million and one ways to blur footage but I believe you are looking for a way to reduce the edge contrast. I simply inverted an unsharp into an alpha matte. It gives you a lot of control over what are defined as edges. I also added in a edge enhancer which expands edges cartoony.

If you don’t have ps extended, I made a free AE cs3 template you can use. It will automatically restore highlights and shadows by filling in available channels.

I don’t think the plane will be a problem or the subject as long as they are not blue, but make sure you click the link I updated, not the email. Also the comp size was 720. And if the person is wearing a blue shirt, you still might have to roto. Cotten shirts tend to encompass the entire blue range/sat…evil they are.

first make sure that you are running 32bpc, have color management setup correctly, are using 32bpc plugins, etc.
Next you can either use a chroma keyer or use procedural matting to isolate the blue tolerance to the blue saturation then a simple fast blur.
I recommend Primatte keyer because it can plug holes which is useful for automatic roto work. If you don’t have it, you can use my free procedural keyer I made. Works on clouds too.

To clarify, this color profile converter step is for dpx’s only, not jpg’s etc. because AE doesn’t recognize the embedded profiles of gamma encoded dpx’s. But you do want to enable scene referred if you have CS4 for jpg’s.

You only use the color profile converter if you are using color management. It works with simulate output(given that you want to use a calibrated monitor and work perfectly with Photoshop). Either both are used, or neither.
All dpx are 10 bit log. They only temporarily go to linear so you can color correct. Everything else that is is not initially a log, needs to be converted to log also.

This free template has scratches, jitter, dirt, vignette, hair, light leaks, dust, exposure, flicker, etc. Just copy and paste or import the layers you would like to use, but remember to resize them as needed.
