I see the picture now. Since you’re on a deadline, I’d quickly check for:
1. any 8 bit plugins being used. They will break the 32bpc.
2. the alpha channels of the images for 8 bit alpha quality
3. straight or premultiplication interpretations

I don’t know exactly what your problem is as you haven’t a screenshot. I’m guessing it’s the actual compositing itself, lighting, color, randomness. Videocopilot.net has a bunch of tutorials on smoke. One I remember that looks good is the police car tire burning tutorial using particular. Match the light sources using light emitters, match depth of field and wind direction, etc. Also, I made a fractal light project that adds light randomness.

also, if you want cascading opacity with whole letters, then read this post. It would also make it easy to add scrambling effects or blinking as each layer has its own individual letter already setup.

the lilly allen fair one looks shot at 30fps non-interlaced with 1/60th shutter blur. You can deinterlace 29.97i footage to get 29.97p then use reelsmart motion blur or timewarp 100% with shutter at 180, to add more vector blur back in.
super furry animals looks 29.97i interlaced with color correction.
You can try my inglorius bastrds preset to get that skin tone.

no matter the size of the stabilization, it will need to be scaled up. Syntheyes in peg mode, can autoscale then autocrop for you. If you don’t care about cropping, then you won’t even need to zoom in. That’s only to remove black borders.

I forgot to add, if time displacement cannont find a clean frame, you can also use bend in conjunction with cc wire removal.
as an example, open the effects control of the project file and enable the last 4 plugins, the curved blue hair will magically disappear from the background. cc bender unwraps the curve then cc wire removes it and finally picture is un-bended. The mocha b-spline can then act as a mask because stretching causes a little softening. Also, in this special case, a rough mask might work too.

Furnace for After Effects has been discontinued as of May 2007.
I don’t think there is a b-spline plugin (one that curves for AE anymore)
You’ll need to use Commotion or Foundry’s Furnace F_WireRemoval or something else for that.
Commotion curves can be exported and imported into After Effects.You can also use mocha to create b-splines then use effect, time displacement to fill in from an adjacement frame

add sharpness,detail, highlights to footage then just scale it up in a HD comp.
Also, if you don’t like AE’s handling of resizing, you can use virtualdub
which has lanzcos bicubic etc, one of the best.

Also, you can simply deinterlace inside AE to get 29.97p
