Stabilize HDV footage –> SD output. Best Workflow?
Hi,
i have a 30mn HDV footage shot at 1440×1080, 4:3
The final output will be transfered to either Digi-Beta or DV Cam PAL.Now i want to stabilize the footage in AE. so I would need to up-scale the image very often, thus reducing the image quality
Since the output will be PAL, is it better to downscale the image by 50% and work from the begining in a PAL comp? (Considering that the upscale due to stabilisation will stay below the 100%)
is it correct to proceed like this? and if not what’s the best workflow?

no matter the size of the stabilization, it will need to be scaled up. Syntheyes in peg mode, can autoscale then autocrop for you. If you don’t care about cropping, then you won’t even need to zoom in. That’s only to remove black borders.

I would track and stabilize in HD to give the tracker more pixels to work with, then I would reposition and down-scale the stabilized footage to fit in the SD frame. Since you’re going from HD to SD, unless the camera shake is very bad, you may never need to scale up.
