I just discovered this problem the hard way, exporting about 15 15-minute pieces which were all multicam and there’s no audio in the first 40 seconds. Really strange. Some of the issues I’ve found thusfar with X are pretty discouraging…

  • I will try to upload some pics later, but remember that the shoulder mount actually slides to adjust for your shoulder. It has two locking positions- the one closer to the eyepiece is designed to bring the VCT-14 mount connection into proper formation to mount on a tripod and then you can extend the shoulder piece to the back of the rails to create a longer, more-shoulder mount feel.

  • Jim-

Here’s some pics of the mount with an Anton Bauer and two Lectro wireless on it. I believe this provides optimal backweight. Since I received a beta version of the mount, I don’t know the final pricing- but I’m sure Mark would be happy to answer your questions on that front.

I find that it feels like a slightly lighter shoulder mount camera- complete with the VCT-14 tripod connection- which I was able to screw my DV6SB plate into and use effortlessly. I think one could keep it well balanced for a long time with the backweight featured in these pics- you can also tweak the EX3 eyepiece to get it a little closer to you…

  • Jim- I actually just got one of the first versions of the EXMount and though it does come from overseas, I can vouch for the timeliness and responsiveness of Mark in making sure that the mount is exactly what you need. It provides the most intuitive, well-balanced solution to shoulder mounting and tripod balancing the EX-3 of any mount yet. As you probably know, other options have been problematic in one way or the other, but I’ve had a hard time finding many functional flaws in the EXMount. I must admit the price was pretty steep for me as well, but since I believe the camera will be around for a long time, I figured it was a worthwhile investment. The craftsmanship is very solid- it feels like a professional piece of gear and was designed with intelligence. Feel free to drop me a line if you’d like to see pics, etc.

  • I just used the same workflow and am looking for answers on how to multiclip as well. One thing I can tell you is that I converted all my 5D footage to the XDCAM EX codec using MPEG Streamclip and it makes my life a lot easier. I’ve never really had multiple cameras so the multiclip thing is new for me. Hope this helps.

Got it. So that picture I posted was created using Boris 3D and exported using the meothd you detailed. Do you think the text looks ok? To me it looks kind of funky…

I’m just trying nail down this text thing once and for all! I find that LiveType files look fine when juxtaposed, but I use Boris for everything not involving motion based text.

Thanks for the response. That method works, but then you have to render your footage to SD before you edit. Additionally, I can’t seem to make the titles look even remotely good in SD- nor have I ever been truly satisfied with clarity of text in Sd using FCP. For years my text has always looked not as crisp as I’d like it to…

Here’s a screen grab from the downconverted image (from HD to SD)- I’ve blurred the subject’s face for confidentiality.

Interesting. I have received different opinions on this in three different forums. One post agreed with what you said, but another said:

If you are nesting an XDCAM sequence in an SD sequence, do remove the text from that sequence, as you don’t want FCP to be scaling the text from the motion parameters in the nest along with the rest of the footage. As a general rule, the motion parameters should not be used for scaling text. Instead, readjust the font size from the controls of the titling tool you are using.

But I do think they look ok…so maybe I’ll save myself the headache. But the principals he mention make sense even if it’s only a marginal difference…

I will say that the PHU-60k has issues . I took it for a test drive on a shoot recently and got a “Media Needs To Be Restored” error after 2.5 hours of shooting. Though some people have reported restoring media does not harm the footage, others have said they have lost everything. I hooked mine up to the Macbook Pro, dumped it and didn’t use it again. That’s enough testing for me. This wasn’t a trying environment, no extreme temps, no earthquakes- if it fails in that environment then it will fail elsewhere when you have no time to dump.

Plus the cards are smaller, and less weighty. I am returning my unit tomorrow.

Thank god for you! That’s a big help. I feel like an idiot. Thanks again.
