That is exactly my point Ron!
The competition was/is very brutal in San Fran!

Ask the people who used to work at the Orphanage about the market in San Francisco.

September 4, 2009 at 2:46 am in reply to: Is Podcasting Dead?

    Yes, except for niche marketing,
I feel podcasts are definitely dying or already dead.
Unfortunately most are like bad radio shows…

Places like Lynda.com are more the future of content distribution…

Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s…

I, like Mark, have many clients that only know and understand hourly rates.
So for those I quote hourly. I haven’t lost any business quoting them thusly.

For the bigger fish I quote on project by adding up what I know it will cost me to do hourly.

There really is no right or wrong in this equation IMHO.

September 1, 2009 at 3:47 am in reply to: Political Spots

Once upon a time I was doing political ads in the same area at the same time for all three political parties (Elephants, Donkeys, and Greens). Each one wanted me to spill the beans on the other’s campaign plans and I politely refused, and just shot and edited the different spots. Fortunately it never got sleazy or libelous on any parties side, although I did pointedly have to turn down one group who wanted me to stalk a candidate outside of his gated community in papparazi type fashion. The most bizarre incident was having Newt Gingrich on speaker phone with my client and the RNC barking marching orders.

    Sean,
are you editing with HDV or DV footage?
If so, those codecs really destroy any text or compositing treatments to your original footage.
Also are you viewing the output on a real TV monitor or just the Premiere Canvas??
This will also make a difference.

You should also actually go to the Firestore forum and do a search on your topic.
Also read most of the posts there.
This has been covered several times already.
And yes it is also very well covered in the manual like Steve points out…
I will give you another pointer to save you and your editor headaches down the road,.
Always shoot in Quicktime mode with the FS, not P2.

    I’ll be the guinea pig!
I’ll still make a bootable OS 10.5.8 clone just in case, but using your own sound logic,
I will still have a usable back up just in case. If everything gets totally FUBARed on the Snow Leopard drive, I can always just nuke it and start from scratch (like I would have to do anyway). It took me a full week to install all the apps, drivers, plug-ins, enter the 20 digit serials numbers, etc. etc. when I outfitted my new Nehalem less than a month ago! And so far I have been one of those (lucky few apparently) who has never done a clean erase and install on any of my MAC systems, and have never had any trouble or problems whatsoever. It will be an interesting experiment, but I WILL still have my CC backup just in case!

We have all had our share of testy posts and exchanges in the past, high blood pressure or no.
It is just so refreshing to see someone offering the peace pipe instead of ending with the gauntlet.
    Classy move, mon ami ;>)

  • Very good post overall Tim, with one major caveat. For an increasing number of people nowadays, their cell phone (be it iPhone or any other brand) IS their personal phone, business phone and their email sending device of preference… The day of the “land line” office phone is rapidly fading away.
    The problem with blanket generalizations.

The desire to actually speak to anyone for any reason is inversely proportional to iPhone ownership. If you really need to speak to someone, virtually anything is better than calling them on their iPhone. If you call them from YOUR iPhone, you deserve all the scorn – and firing – that you receive.
