  • I would also like to hear a report. Could be fun.

  • Shane, because it’s *interesting*. I like the idea of tabbed windows, file tagging, and energy efficiency while unplugged (I use a souped up MBP 2012 as primary machine after some of your past recommendations). I might shoot a question back at you. Why be against somebody trying? It could be roses. It’s been roses for me combining FCP 7 and Mountain Lion, along with AJA ioXT.

Hey Shane, FCP 7 and Mountain Lion and AJA work so well for me and play nicely together. I’m surprised to hear some are having issues. My real question, on October 21st, is why are you sure about Mavericks and FCP not playing nice together? I’m searching around the net for any info on it but so far nothing.

Hi Zach I can report now. Sorry for the very long delay.
Yes i was able to make two bare drives work without the caddies. But it doesn’t feel nearly as secure and it’s a pain — using a headlamp, pliers to lower the drive carefully into the connector, and folded paper spacers be tween the drives. Oh, and round screws screwed into the bottom of the bottom drive, for lift. Not fun. Your milage may vary.

Ive used the headphone out before. I’m no sound expert but it allowed me to complete an edit. Ive also used a small HDMI audio dismbedder that goes to both RCA stereo and optical.

By the way, I’m also having some temporary audio issues with the XT around a digital distortion. It goes away after start/stop playback. But this happens with or without the disembedder. I have not searched this forum for the solution on that yet. I may just need a driver update.

Hi Zach. I’ve been so busy that I have not explored the possibilities. I’m working on a ProRes LT project on a single FW800 drive and have put the CalDigit on the shelf for a moment. But I will update soon. Thanks for the prompt.

Jon, I hear you. What needs to be known is that this condition of the product is not self evident upon purchase. Most people’s experience with caddies is in the Mac Pro. This experience informs the opinion that this method of permanent bonding between drive and caddy is arbitrary, and a scheme for making more money, at the expense of very practical usability. It’s odd. It’s not cool.

I’ve mostly liked the drive and even recommended it to others. And that’s even though it performs at 200 MB/sec, NOT 250 MB/sec as advertised, under USB-3. But now I feel less inclined to recommend. I paid $800 for it so I could go down to the corner store and buy a bare drive to put in it, not to sign up for a razor blades business.

Yes I’m all over the manual method. Just thought I may have missed something. Thanks.

  • I installed. So far, so good. AJA Io XT outputting FCP 7 on 2012 Macbook Pro just fine.
