Your file size is really small so that’s not it. If you switched the scratch disks back to the external drive, saved and relaunched, and still the lagging persists, it’s not that. You say it starts lagging on the same clip, or the same section, every time? What happens if you remove a few of the suspect clips there? Is there anything different about that section, such as codec or frame rate?

    It’s a mystery.

How big is the file size? And what are your sequence settings?

  • Okay, I solved my own problem. Motion 5 handles things quite differently than Motion 3 in this respect. You have to turn Glow on in Text/Appearance. It defaults to Black. Change this to a glow colour of your choice. Glow will now be applied to everything. If you just want it for the effect, drag Blur and Radius to 0. Now adjust settings in the Behaviours for your effect, i.e. Glow Through. Though you may need to go back and adjust opacity etc. in the Text section. A little awkward actually but I guess there’s more control overall.

  • Yes, my mistake about ProRes 422 HQ being alpha. It’s ProRes 4444 that supports transparency, as noted. That’s what happens when you write from your iPhone laying in bed. Here’s a spec sheet on the variations of Apple ProRes that you might want to read: click me.

I see you’re getting a lot of help from people here so I won’t interfere too much :). I wouldn’t confine yourself to a square (5:4) format though, especially when the source footage appears to be 16:9. You could make this HD instead of SD and your viewers will thank you for it.

Would you consider putting the French subtitles at the top of the screen? I’ve seen that done before. Anything to keep all of the content within a 16:9 frame.

Could you deliver the project as a Blu-ray to the theatre? I’ve even brought my own player in some instances. Interlaced SD footage on the big screen is not pretty. If they’d accept Blu-Ray, you could master a 1080p, and assuming you’ll have web versions, you won’t be sending an already HD project back in time…

(To achiever this, If your master footage is in fact 720 x 576, you’d have to crop the top and bottom black bars and up convert to 1080p.)

  • You’re delivering to YouTube and your data rate is 55-100 MB/sec. 😉 I don’t know much about the Animation codec but why did you choose that over Pro Res 422? Is it because you need to support an alpha channel. Others can chime in here but I believe Pro Res 422 HQ also does that and the files will be much smaller. Otherwise, if you don’t need an alpha channel, you could just export back to Pro Res 422 and set your timeline to match that. There won’t be any discernible quality loss and all of your options will reappear. Right now they’re greyed out because the data rate is too high. Least that’s my guess.

    Hi Michael,

I deleted the Waveform Cache files outright, straight to trash, then moved and reconnected (or just change the folder name, so FCP thinks you’re moving them) the Capture Scratch media files – the .mov files. It was important, in my case, to break connection with the .mov files, then reconnect, at which point waveforms were recreated and everything worked just fine.

I should add that the waveform cache or thumbnail cache files are not a big deal. You can delete them anytime and they’ll just recreate themselves when you relaunch FCP.

Hmm. Well just to clarify, I had the issue w FCP 6 and resolved it and now have waveforms and have been editing happily ever since, using just about every OS from SL onward; most recently Mavericks and now El Capitan. There’s plenty of others editing w vs 7 who have also not reported an ongoing issue with missing wave forms. I’m sorry for your troubles!

in case you’re interested, I’ll further elaborate. I broke the connection to some of my media files by simply moving them to another folder, then witnessing the lost connections and saving my project file. I quit FCP, deleted my waveform folder and relaunched. I was prompted to reconnect my missing files which I did. When finished, I double clicked on the files, switched to audio in the canvas and literally watched FCP redraw the waveforms right in front of me.

You could test this method with a few files, and if it works, just rename your main folder, or folders. Easy.

    Good luck!

Oh my goodness, all this because you have missing wave forms? Is that really a widespread issue with FCP 7? Might want to hear from more than just one user.

For what it’s worth, I ran into this problem as well… on FCP 6. The fix was to break the media links then reconnect. So I copied my media files to another folder, reconnected, and presto… The waveforms redrew themselves right before my eyes. Have you tried doing that?
