burning a DVD without strech or in a box
Hello,
I just edited a new sequence on FCP 7.
When I check the item properties it says it is 720 x 576 – 25 fps.
It matches with the system settings.When I export the video as H264 and view it with QT or VLC it always shows it in a box all around.
On the timeline of FCP the video is not in a box.I suspect it has something to do with perhaps the video on the timeline being anamorphic.
Do you have any ideas of how to solve this problem?
I am trying to burn a DVD out of this timeline.
And when I burn a DVD directly from fcp without using conversion but compressor, it still burns it in a box.Any suggestions?

Why export to H264. Export QT movie without conversion, DV PAL in this instance, then make your DVD from that. If your footage is anamorphic don’t forget to set that when building the DVD.

My problem is that, I am not sure if my footage on the timeline is anamorphic.
The post-prod. company gave me this footage months ago and I just placed it on the timeline.
When I try to export it, I cannot find a proper way to export it the way it looks on the timeline.
It is either stretched from the sides, or placed in a box overall.
No matter what I do, ı cannot get rid of the black box…
I tried DV PAL now, same result…

Ok, in the FCP browser select one of your clips, right click, then from the drop down menu choose “Format”. You will see all the info about the raw clip. My guess is that it’s a non standard frame size and you didn’t set up your sequence manually. Instead dropped a clip into the timeline and said yes when you were asked if you wish to set the sequence to match your footage. Take a look at your sequence settings and see if they agree with the settings displayed in the browser and what you assumed the frame size of the imported clips were.

On the timeline, when ı check the format, it is 720 x 576. 25 FPS. PAL
When I check Audio/Video Settings – Sequence Presets – they are the same.
I check Easy Setup, it is the same as well…

that is a problem!
looking at the canvas, is it the shape of an old fashioned tv, (square-ish)
or the shape of a new tv (more rectangular)DV PAL, by its nature is the squair-sh 4/3 ratio
but a wider image can be compressed within that ratio,
then the screen stretched back out to present a more rectangular 16/9 ratio.the most likely bet is your frame is 4/3
if so, does the image look compressed, squished up?
do people look tall and skinny?then your footage was shot anamorphic, but is now displaying as 4/3
if you could upload some screen shots of your footage in FCP,
and the quicktime file you’ve made,
it would be a lot easier o figure out what the problem is.nick

720 x 576 is correct SD PAL frame size. If your pictures are 4:3 then the anamorphic flag in the sequence should be off.
If your sequence is 16:9 then you still make the DVD as 720 x 576 as this is the only setting for a DVD. Your sequence settings will be anamorphic and not letterboxed.
Don’t go anywhere near DV codec unless that is your original format. Also avoid H264 as that has no place in DVD. I recommend you export a self contained quicktime using current settings so it matches the codec of you content and sequence. Take that into Compressor to create the m2v file that is DVD standard.
When authoring the DVD In DVDStudio Pro, you have to set the aspect ratio to either 4:3 or 16:9 so you need to know what your sequence is

Here are the screen shots.
1. This is how the image looks like on canvas. It is not stretched or squished. This is how I want it to look on a DVD.
2. This is how item properties – format look of the timeline.
3. When I export is as QT with Current Settings and Anamorphic was checked under Sequence Presets, this is how it looks when I play it with QT Player.
4. And anamorphic is checked.
Can you guess what the problem is?

the clip is NOT anamorphic,
it is letter-boxed 4/3
so you shouldn’t be exporting as anamorphicBUT
almost NO-ONE has a 4/3 TV anymore,
almost everyone watches 16/9 TV now,
so the only way to show your 4/3 film on a 16/9 TV is PILLAR BOXED, which means bars left and right
and seeing as how your image is already LETTER BOXED, (bars top and bottom)
then your DVD will most likely be seen as you show us, black all around (POSTAGE STAMP)what you could possibly do is to blow the image up to fill the whole frame,
but you have subtitles. are they burt into the DV?
then if you blow up the image, you lose the subs.i don’t quite understand why your quicktime file is showing the clip pillar-boxed
that doesn’t make sense to me.nick

I want to keep the subtitles underneath, that why I cannot blow it up.
I think what ı need to find out is why each time ı export it, and no matter which player I use (QT, VLC etc.) it is always in a box…
