no what you posted was a screen grab from your A/V settings window,

we need to see the sequences settings of the actual sequence you are working in.
right click on the sequence in the browser, and choose “settings”
OR
with that sequence in the timeline, and the timeline active, hit Command Zero (top row , not the number pas)

DONT send a DVD!
i mean Standard deff will be low quality enough,
no need to make it worse by compressing to a DVD!
if your source is DV, and you are doing a lot of subtitling work,
i’d suggest working in a ProRes422 sequence, as your text will look a lot better.

unfortunately the movie theatre wants a DVD.

I asked them if ı was able to send a digital file but they said no…

ı will send you the screen shot of the timeline setting tomorrow.

hopefully we’ll be able to fix this problem.

they want a DVD by this Saturday…

I see you’re getting a lot of help from people here so I won’t interfere too much :). I wouldn’t confine yourself to a square (5:4) format though, especially when the source footage appears to be 16:9. You could make this HD instead of SD and your viewers will thank you for it.

Would you consider putting the French subtitles at the top of the screen? I’ve seen that done before. Anything to keep all of the content within a 16:9 frame.

Could you deliver the project as a Blu-ray to the theatre? I’ve even brought my own player in some instances. Interlaced SD footage on the big screen is not pretty. If they’d accept Blu-Ray, you could master a 1080p, and assuming you’ll have web versions, you won’t be sending an already HD project back in time…

(To achiever this, If your master footage is in fact 720 x 576, you’d have to crop the top and bottom black bars and up convert to 1080p.)

those sequence settings are correct, so you shouldn’t be having any weirdness when you export,
maybe you did something odd with your previous export?

try a simple test export or a second or so of the timeline (use in and out points)
with your export DONT change any of the settings,
leave it at the default “same strings” or “Current settings” (Cant remember which one it is)

see how it looks.

how does it look in the canvas, by the way?
the same as the viewer?

Pressed my time, we ended up putting the french subtitles at the top of the screen and cropping the export to 16:9, as suggested by Christopher.
