I’m waking this thread up with the same query: Is it possible to send/export (I don’t have FCP open and can’t remember which one it is) directly from the Timeline to Compressor 4 — using FCP 6.0.6. I know the workaround but I’d rather go direct… and yes, I need Compressor 4 for the HTTP Live Streaming feature.

FCP 6 is five years old…VERY old in software years. Trying to get software that old to work on new OS is pretty difficult, if not impossible. And since FCP 7 is no longer sold besides on eBay, used(it at least installs and works on ML)…you might be stuck needing to use older computers and older OS versions.
“I’m a FCP 6.0.6 user cutting with a rMBP 15″ (2012) with ML 10.8.3. No problems to report so far. After buying the laptop, I had to call Apple and order a SL disk. I then installed Rosetta from the Extras which allowed me to then install FCP 6 and do the updates from there. So I confirm that despite being legacy, it’s all good!
With every new update, I’m a little concerned though. So I always make a Carbon Clone of my OS before updating.
I hope FCP 6.0.6 will still work with Mavericks. We’ll have to start a thread at that time and report back to each other.

I’m running FCP 6.0.6 on ML 10.8.3. No problemos.

Hmm. I don’t know about importing Canon 5D footage (you need a special plugin for that?), but I’ve been running FCP 6.0.6 on ML 10.8.2 with no problems whatsoever. I’m now curious to know if 10.8.3 will be the same.

For what’s it worth, I installed FCP 6.0.6 on a 2011 Macbook Air i5 1.7 GHz, and was able to cut quite well using the 27″ TBD. My media was stored on a FW drive routed through the display. My timeline was mulit-layered, HDV and ProRes. Honestly, it was an improvement over my aging G5 PowerMac! But I ran into problems with Motion. I could only use Motion when it was the only application running, and even then performance was dodgy. But… I was cash-strapped and this was my solution.
I’ve since upgraded to a rMBP i7 2.6 GHz and it is awesome! If you have the money, definitely get a more powerful machine. No question. The time you’ll save on rendering and compressing footage alone will make you grateful that you did. If you want power with portability, the retina is calling your name!

Yes. Amazingly there are still some of using this archaic 4 year old software to cut movies! Unfortunately, even though Apple continued to sell version 7 by phone after pulling the plug on it (for a limited time), they didn’t offer the upgrade version. The 6 upgrade cost me nearly a grand. Should I have paid another grand to be one year further away from obsolete? Ha. But rant aside, I’ve had no problems w 6.0.6 and Lion. Until now. And I’m not sure it’s a STP Lion thing. That’s why I’m asking. Thank you for your question, Michael. But I did export an aif file and lay it into the timeline. It’s exporting to Compressor that is giving me ill results. Namely changing the levels and making the audio sound processed, as if recompressed. I can just use the STP export for a DVD build, just hope I don’t have different levels, etc, in a h.264 export.

Man, this sucks. I ran into the same problem after upgrading to Lion, where some clips worked, some didn’t. No rhyme or reason, just as you say. The fix for me was to simply drag the captured files that didn’t work into another folder, essentially breaking the link. Then recapturing. Upon recapture, and double-clicking, the waveforms magically redrew themselves. But I see you’ve tried that, so… I don’t know what else to say.

Ryan, you probably need Rosetta. I found it online somewhere. Find it, download it, and you should be good to go.

Is it really necessary to do a clean install of FCP and/or OS X every single time? It’s time consuming, means I have to dig out all my serials and reinstall every other piece of software, etc. It’s 2012. Sure this isn’t just being overly and unnecessarily cautious?
P.S. You can pounce on me all you want. But it needs to be asked. 😉
