I have no personal experience with this myself, BUT, I was standing in an LA store that sells a lot of Macs to the industry and overheard the manager and a sales person talking about which model should be in the displays – and I quote “Nobody buys the 17s, they’re just too big to travel with”. I would imagine they have their finger on the pulse. Personally, I could use the larger screen to help organize bins and files but i do hate schlepping equipment (cameraman for 10 years). I love telling them that I can shoot it, but they’ll have to hire an editor to edit it. My bay is available at 175$ hour but, because they’re family, I’ll drop it to 125 an hour. Oh, and by the way it usually takes 100 hours of editing with the 3 cameras I bring out with intricate setups and the Opening and Closing montages with intricately woven music from the bride and grooms favorite list running through the enitre video, etc. “Can’t we just dub it straight over to DVD? Why yes, I say – thats about 250 an hour and there are 9 hours of footage and 2 passes are required for 2 pass encoding = 18hrs X 250! They get the picture very quickly that they’ve overstepped their bounds. They’ll spend 10k on a wedding photographer who spends a couple of 4 hour sessions with them – but they’ll barely spring for tapestock on a 100 hour job. And this happens every single time! P.S. I do like the previous poster’s advice about asking for the same hours free in return from the business the brides father owns! Can you imagine a 100 free hours from an attny, doc. or dentist? -
My experience with M100 and FCP are just the opposite. I just finished a 12 hour program with M100 with 8 audio tracks and 2 graphics tracks and it performed flawlessly all the way through sdi out. Our FCP tends to move projects around, drop programs and have audio drift problems on long projects. We keep it because some clients ask for it, but when it comes to crunch time – it’s M100 to the rescue. I’m sure others will disagree – but don’t be so quick to count out M100. I have one project that started back on 4.5. The media has traveled from the original $7000 144GB scsi raid to internal ATAs and now to an external 2.5TB SATA array. Every clip has relinked – every time. It’s been rock solid since the day I bought it. I’m thrilled to see the new blood Boris has pumped into the line. Best of Luck in your quest. Hey Bob,
If you just want to take the file over to a pc which also has Quicktime:
1. – just insert your blank media. (If your .mov file from M100 is larger than 700mb you’ll need to insert a DVD – if it’s 700mb or less use a CD)
2. – when the disc image appears on your desktop just drag the mov file to it.
3. – Now drag the disc image to your toolbar where your trash icon normally exists. It should now be a “yellow and black” circle similar to a radiation symbol. Just drop the disc image there and your mac will ask you what settings to burn the disc at. (If there is no symbol there – try using something like “Roxio Toast”) and follow the previous steps. I believe you’ve had problems burning your file in Itunes because it’s extracting the audio only from your mov.
4. – After the disk has succesfully burned, just take it to your PC.
5. – If your PC doesn’t have Quicktime, navigate on the PC to the quicktime website and download it. The basic version (player only) should be free. Once it’s loaded it should recognize and play the mov file without a hitch.

It’s very common for that to happen. With many different brands and models, there are certain things certain cameras do well. Sometimes things done really well in one area force sacrifices in others. Sales people are pressured to sell product – so many times they tell you what you want to hear. There really isn’t a bad camera out there – it’s just that some might perform badly in the parameters you’re asking it to perform in. When you’re dropping 6k on the basic camera – don’t hesitate to make that sales person work with you – even when they roll their eyes – then come back to the cow and ask more ?s. I can’t tell you how much great advice I’ve gleaned just by reading the cow on a daily basis. It was the single most helpful tool I’ve ever discovered. Best of luck in your search! We shot a feature in July with 2 of these cameras and ended up needing 8 8 gig cards just to keep from interupting the workflow. Even with a dedicated P2 transfer station on set – we still lost time and most horribly some shots on import after we had already changed setups. I would not recommend this camera for “run and gun” situations. Beautiful images when lit for film but I am not convinced about the capture technology benefits vs price for storage cards/reliability etc. Our editors (who work on a long running tv series) are still getting different stories on what the definitive post flow should be 5 months after wrap. The folders are all in the right places. Have loaded them twice – they just wont show in the “master to tape” window under “Leaders”. I’ve figured out a workaround for now but it would sure be nice to fix that problem. Thanks for your help. Kind Regards, Chris

Yes, I did find them there, but following the printed manual has not made them available in the “master to tape” window. I’ve done this twice – no luck. Quite frustrating as I have 12 hours of mastering and 12 hours of QC due by monday. Thanks for the help! Chris
