    Paul,

I’m also considering a Cineform workflow on the PC. Why don’t you like it? What issues have you found?

    Thanks

  • As I mentioned in the original post, this has been going on for several years, across different operating system versions and different hardware. It can’t possibly be just the GPU driver, though I do agree that it certainly has something to do with the way AE connects to the video display structure of the OS. The only common denominator is After Effects.

  • Yes that’s another whole discussion. Wouldn’t it be great if Apple licensed OSX for other hardware? Anyway, what’s your best guess as to why Apple sees fit to license the ProRes codec for use in Scratch but not Resolve? Did the Scratch guys just ask more politely? Or does the Scratch price point just allow them to cover the licensing expense where a $1K resolve price would not?

  • Glad we are generally moving in a positive direction. You say take it up with Apple, but they’re not going to listen to me. Otherwise there would be a FCP 8 and the newest Mac Pro would have PCI slots. I guess I was hoping BMD could make it happen since their customers are asking for it.

  • It’s a buyer-beware situation since they are not officially supported codecs from Apple on the Windows platform.

Well that’s the problem isn’t it? There IS NO officially supported ProRes codec (for writing) on the Windows platform. I appreciate these companies trying to solve a problem that Apple has no incentive to solve.

    [Kendall Kaiser]
If it mounts under c:/Volumes, every application sees the same file path:

    /Volumes/Volume_Name/folder/file”

Which is great for every app EXCEPT AVID. This is because avid only sees media drives correctly (on Windows) if they are separate drive letters, as far as I can tell.

Actually, Avid is the only software where this is NOT a problem because of how it does the media management. Stuff shows up linked whether the project is launched on the Mac or the PC.

The problem occurs with pretty much everything else. Any app that uses the file system and directory paths to identify file locations. So, all Adobe apps, Davinci Resolve, etc. Have to relink all the time.

    Hey Dave,

I’ve had a Penta 24″ for a week or so sitting right next to my Flanders. I was looking at Penta because they make larger, calibrated LCDs. I was thinking of replacing my 50″ Plasma with something that would match my FSI better and that would hold a calibration. Since a demo of a 50″ monitor isn’t that practical, they sent me a 24″ to have a look at. Generally speaking, I’d say I’ve been impressed. It seems to hold the highlights a bit better than the Flanders, and appears to have more detail and sharpness overall. I’ve not put a probe on it or done anything beyond subjective testing but it looks really good. Of course “accurate” is what you’d want. I’m not sure about long term stability, but I definitely think it would be an improvement over the (really good) plasma that I have for a client monitor and would do away with the “which monitor is right” question that I occasionally get from clients. I normally just say look at the FSI, and ensure them that it won’t look like either of my monitors when it gets to someone’s home!

I could put you in touch with the Penta guy from CineSys if you like; I think they have some NAB “demo” units for good prices.

Also be sure to check out Penta monitors. They look as good or better than FSI and have sizes all the way up to “55.

What resolved the Decklink issue? I’m having the same problem now; no video out from v7 to my Decklink card.

    Thanks
