I’ve run into the same problem yesterday. Except that I now get the spinning beachball of death when I try to trim in every sequence in my project, not just in the sequence with the nested stuff.
When running system maintenance and trashing FCP prefs yiedled no results, I saved the project with a new name. I then opened the original project again and restored it to a version prior to the time when started working with the nested sequence. Everything works fine – and I can trim again without that spinning pest.
However, I lost a bunch of render files and of course all the edits I made after working with the nest.

    I’m running FCP HD 4.5 on a 1.5 Ghz G4 Powerbook with 1.5 gig memory with G-drives.
    Project is NTSC DV.
