Well I found the problem. It was heat after all. I cleaned out the box. It was dusty as hell. Tried a render and it got to 100% with no problems. Thankyou to all for being so helpful and so quick to respond.

I just made a new session. I just tried importing a .mpeg file into a new timeline with a .wav audio file. rendered and it too crashed at 30%. So this tells me that the file type doesn’t matter. Where do I go from here?

Actually thinking about it, I would rather not re-install windows 7. This as it turns out would be a huge nightmare. I’d like to find a fix if possible.

I just ran the codec tweak and it found a few unused files, asked me to delete them , which I did. I just tried rendering again and the computer crashed at 50% once again. I wonder whether I shouldn’t format my hard drive and re-install windows 7. I only have a couple of programs I use on that computer. I run Sonar X1 (D.A.W.) and Vegas. I have one or two other things but I can re-install. Wouldn’t be the end of the world. I worry that this is a Vegas issue though. And regarding the .mts files, I just can’t believe Vegas is suffering with me importing those files. Pretty standard I would think.

Q1) The media on my timeline is HD (.mts files from a Canon Vixia HF M52)
Q2) I am rendering to .MP4 (720p) although the same thing happens with .avi and I suspect other templates.
Q3) I am using default settings
Q4) No images on this timeline.
    Q5) .wav audio file
Q6) 36.8 gb free on drive C, 404gb free on drive E, 81.7 gb free on drive F, 251 gb free on drive Z
I have been rendering to drive C and I just tried rendering to my F drive and the same thing happened. I also just rendered to my external G drive and it also crashed the computer at 50%. My media is on my F drive.
Q7) I am using 1 plugin, a little brightness and contrast. The movie I am rendering is just under 6 minutes long.

The computer should be able to handle this. Could this be a registry issue? I am at a loss.

Thanks Jeff – I actually figured it out. After doing exactly as you mentioned and it still crashing, I went into the folder where all the files are and removed the temp files (ie the .bak and .sfk files). Then I renamed the vegas file. Then I opened the session and it created new temp files which I guess it must call from during the rendering session. Anyway, it rendered fine. I guess there was some glitch in one of the temp files that the program kept calling during render. Or I could be way off. 🙂 Anyway, it worked.

I hunted all over the web and found similar problems but none of them related quite to this. So I hope this helps someone in the future.
