2. Particle Playground and Glow will do fairy dust very well.
1. If you upgrade to AE 6.5 for a mere $99 you will get the CC effects thrown in free. You can use CC Sphere to turn images into 3D spheres. Also it has even more particle systems for your fairy dust.

I use the Decklink Xtreme with FCP myself. As far as a monitor with component. I beg you to do yourself a huge favor and get a good Sony monitor with component or SDI in. If you are using anything other than component or SDI, you might as well not even have an output monitor or do graphics for others to ever see on a TV.
Here is a great monitor that you can actually find for only a few hundred if you look around. I paid $1400 for mine but I’ve seen them much cheaper lately:

Actually in doing a search I found a 20″ version for sale here at the Cow:

There are two deformers that give you explosion/shatter effects, you may at least want to try both of those and see if they will suit your needs first before the much more complicated use of particles/dynamics/instancing approach.

Dynamic forces are the forces available in C4D that act on things called Gravity, Wind, etc…

My Keyboard is an FCP keyboard. It helps with FCP. I remember 80% of it, but when you are searching for that odd key, it’s nice to have it there.
