still image
Posted by Ann Bens on August 1, 2005 at 7:05 pmHello,
I want to zoom in on a jpeg 2560×1920 300dpi taken with a digital camera. The picture contains much horizontal and vertikal lines (lot of windows and steps). While zooming in, there is a lot of hor. and vert. flickering. Tried different settings Pal 720 x 576 square pixels, non square pixels, comp size, 150 dpi.
Also it won’t let itself render queue to Microsoft dv Pal 48 Hz. Does not suppurt format or hardware problem? Any suggestions anyone?

August 1, 2005 at 8:48 pmApply a small amount of blur: usually directional blur, vertical, 1 pixel or so. The best way to test is with a broadcast monitor: add just enough to stop the jitter on a still frame.
Sorry, don’t know about the DV issue — probably your comp is not the proper frame size/rate for DV? I use the comp size presets to create common comp sizes.

August 1, 2005 at 9:02 pmSteve’s suggestion is what I tend to do. Your problem is that there’s TOO much resolution in the photo. Blurring it will knock down that resolution and stop the flickering.
You tend to get this a lot in 3D programs as well, when you’re using high resolution textures.
Good luck!

August 2, 2005 at 6:56 pmOk I will be animating still photos. So I did a test and got the flicker. Then I applied the gausian blur effect at just 1.0. It stopped the flicker. Since I did not want a blurred photo once it parked full screen- one frame before the park I added a key frame keeping the blur at 1.0 and the next fey one frame later blur effect at 0.0.So there are two key frames side by side one frame apart. I have not looked at this on a TV just a computer monitor. Will this flicker be gone in the parked photo once viewed as a DVD played on a TV?

August 2, 2005 at 7:14 pmIf the photo has thin horizontal lines, you’ll very likely get a flicker on TV. The thin horizontal lines will be rendered partially by one scanline and partially by another. Since the scanlines display alternately, you’ll get a flicker.
I recommend you keep the blur, but make it 1 pixel vertical only.
But to be sure, I’d also say that you should hook up a DV camcorder to your computer through Firewire, then a TV to that. Preview your animations out the Firewire on the TV (if your version of AE allows – check the manual) and see, otherwise you’re totally unprepared for professional motion graphics on TV.
I also recommend you make the first keyframe a hold keyframe. If you don’t, there can be some interpolation between the two if you render fields.
