I don’t know anything about Vegas but I assume it suppoerts quicktime and I assume you want the text to have transparency so that it will composite over your picture.

Render your comp. The default settings should have it using lossless which is Quicktime using the ‘animation’ codec. But since you want an alpha channel. Set the settings to ‘millions of colors+’ and to RGB + Alpha. You will probably want to play around with exporting as a premultiplied alpha and a straight alpha. Whatever you choose, set the alpha in Vegas as the same. If you set it opposite you can get dark or bright halos around the edges when you try to composite the image.

I was shooting an element of a girl on GS for an agency as an element in a cell phone ad. We lit her frontal with two bare kino tubes and did vertical kinos on either side as backlight. We used sky pans on a 12×12 GS. Didn’t use much of the GS since as mentioned we shot it on a long lens (around 180mm if I remember correctly).

Don’t know if it turned out well because after I turn in the dailies I walk from the project. Don’t know what they keyed it with or how it turned out.

Hmm, don’t know about that one. I assume you already tweaked all the options in the AE video out prefs. Have you posted in the AJA Cow? What drivers or other software have you changed except for Tiger?

Many apps had to have special drivers to work in Tiger. Make sure you have AJA’s Tiger drivers all going.

  • Well, generally what isn’t lit just doesn’t have light. It’s way easier to take a flat, overly lit image and build in contrast, but the other way around can really degrade your image by bringing up noise/grain where areas are underexposed. As a whole though you can just color correct it brigher. Bring the whites up and balance the gammas back out. You can lift the blacks but it will make them milky.

Yowza. That will be tough. I’ll give you my thoughts, but I’d be amazed if it will ever look “normal”.

Duplicate your clip. On the top duplicate, animate a column shaped mask that defines the area of the wash out. So that in the end if you solo’d that layer you would only see the wash out areas.

Once this is done. I’d first color correct it to get it as close as possible. AE doesn’t really have any built in color correction tools that aren’t a joke for video but you can try color finesse (free w/ 6.5) or spend a few hours jacking with levels, curves, and hue/sat.

You’ll want to give it it’s contrast back first, since the wash out substantially decreases the contrast. You’ll want to de-tint the blues to get it to match the non-washed areas. Etc.

lastly, on that same dup’d layer, you can try ficking through the transfer modes and see if something does any magic for you.

The wash is pretty brutal so I don’t think it will ever be unfixed completely, but with a bit of tweaking on it, it may not be severe.

Is that legal to use Google’s images for broadcast w/o permission?

Well the first challenge is to reconform your edit in AE becuause you’re going to want to repo each shot for the 16:9 version. This conform would sit inside a second comp that would have a rectangle mask over it to the 16:9 dimensions. It’s a complete bear to do. Really if you have something like FCP, it’s easier in that. At least on the G5 I have, FCP using the widescreen filter is realtime and has an offset parameter to repo the image to best fit the new cropping.

If you feel like doing it in Shake, I made a handy macro node that does this as well if you want it.

  • PI is not true 3D though is it? Or will it be? Does it instance other layers to particles? To me, that’s the power of Particular. However PI does have quite a library of pre-made effects all though 99% of them are a bit cheese 🙁
