If I’m reading your question right, you want to have your image break apart into different pieces and fly away. This is actually rather simple in motion and doesn’t require having to go out to Photoshop. You simply need to use some particles.
(the image you want to disassemble will need an alpha channel though so if you’re creating it in Photoshop, make sure you save it with alpha.)

Andy Neil did a series a while back on exploding text and the principals are pretty much the same. You just need to swap in your logo image for the text.

Link for the first video is here:https://library.creativecow.net/neil_andy/Exploding-Text_Apple-Motion_1/1

You could also try keying in Final Cut Pro and then exporting the clips you need out and then import ’em into Motion too. Downloading it again might be your best bet in the long run but if you’re up against the clock, that might save you a little time in the event that the re-download doesn’t work.

January 24, 2013 at 11:12 pm in reply to: Skimming? Is it really that great?

For my purposes, I didn’t find an implementation of skimming that I found particularly compelling to use until I saw it in Final Cut Pro X. I find it quite handy for previewing footage quickly. Previous implementations of skimming weren’t nearly as fast to use.

What’s your take on it Chi-Ho? Does it work for you?

  • Kenneth,

Yes, it is pretty simple in Final Cut Pro and it should be with Premiere as well. As the clips are simply files, its just a matter of importing them into your NLE.

Unless you’re talking about capturing while you’re shooting the video. If that’s what you’re attempting to do then it gets a little trickier. You’ll need a capture card that can pull the feed in off of your camera’s HDMI output and then capture in your NLE real time (capture now in FCP, “live capture” in premiere pro). I believe Matrox & Black Magic Design both have cards that will do this.

Yes, it would appear that the update has fixed that problem.

I had a couple of suggestions that I’d still like to share in the event that you ever need them: Mocha (which integrates pretty well with a Motion workflow, though it does require learning a new app) and Blender (which can be used as a finishing tool in place of Motion, though like Mocha it requires learning a new app and can be a rather steep learning curve.)

Mocha isn’t cheap, but it has a planar tracker that is second to none. Blender is free! From what I understand, there is a way (plug-in I believe) that will allow you to send your results to Motion from Blender but I haven’t used it. Both seem to be far more friendly at this point to After Effects.

But this may all be a moot point for you.

    Happy tracking!

  • Yep, this changed with the update to Motion 5. Great trick while it worked though!

I don’t know of any shortcuts. It might be more efficient to create the drop zone, duplicate and then add in your source image/movie.

Almost was a deal-breaker for me. My first couple of projects were PAINFUL because the in-app render was so bloody slow. Even when I was working in proxy res.

I’ve come to learn that I don’t HAVE to render even though my render bar tells me otherwise. Once I realized that, my render worries have decreased significantly.

Not quite understanding #2. What do you mean by manually organizing your clips?
