    > 2.) Is it possible to change pan on multiple audio clips? Very annoying when having to change pan to center on ALL audio clips separately (both left and right channels).

Change the Pan on one clip then Copy the clip…Highlight all the clips that you want to match the pan with and then right click one of them and select “Paste Attributes” then in the pop-up box you can select pan, then just hit “OK”

    > 4.) Is it for real that FCP can’t read PNG files which are perfect to work with transparency? And that the only transparency accepted picture format is PSD?

You can also use Targa files XD

    > 5.) When using the ‘add default transition’ keyboard shortcut is seems that I can’t set all the parameters for the transition beforehand. For example the ‘Dip to color transition’ won’t save the color I choose when double clicking the transition in the effects browser and editing it. Very annoying to add 10 transition by one click and then STILL having to edit each one separately. Am I doing something wrong?

You will have to edit the default transition directly if you don’t want to change it every time. (May require some coding)

    > 7.) Creating figures: in Premiere there is a title tool in which it’s also possible to draw different shapes with tools reminiscent of the tools in Illustrator/Photoshop. This is VERY handy. Anything similar in FCP or does it only have the rigid shape generators in the effects panel?

Unless there is a plug-in yup that is the only way I know how

    > 10.) Is it not possible to export more than one sequence at a time (no batch processor/queue)?

Export them using compressor and it will queue them

Those are all the answers I can give based upon my knowledge hopefully someone can help you more or give you better solutions!

    > Elaborate this change on size/pixels aspect, please.

    It used to be:
    Frame Size: 1280×1020
    Aspect Ratio: HD (1280×1020) (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1280×1080)

    > Is your sequence 1920×1080 SQ pixels?
    Yes it is 1920×1080 Square.

    > Is your footage 1920×1080 SQ pixels?
    Yes it is as well.

    > If so, does the footage in the time-line has “Size100%” and “Distort > Aspect Ratio: 0”?

    Yes it does

Alright! When rendering 1920×1080 this is what Activity Monitor Displays:

FCP is using 29 Threads and Average 1.6 GB Real Mem
    It uses 358% CPU Average

    65% By the User
    25% By the System
    10% Idle

My computer is only a Quad-Core so my speeds will probably jump even higher going to the 6 or 8 core. I’ll check out the site! Thanks!

  • You can’t just drag and drop .MXF into FCP it is not fully supported you will have to convert it first. I use Cannon’s XF Utilities to import my stuff since it came with my camera, if you don’t have the software convert it to another format first

    >What’s the frame size and format of these graphics you are exporting? Are they optimal for your 1920×1080 FCP timeline?

I create the graphics at 1920×1080 unless they need to be bigger so that when I zoom in on them they don’t get grainy (only done that once so far). I am not sure what you mean if they are optimal.

    >Any special reason you’re using MP3 for VO’s (am guessing you’re just receiving them that way). Whatever, I’d recommend you transcode the VO clips to 48kHz AIFF before you drop them int your projects.

Yes I receive them that way.

    >So 1920×1080 60i (interlaced) using the XDCAM HD 422 codec then?

When I import the footage it puts it in AppleProRes 422.

    >And how do you deliver al this stuff? What format? HD or SD, progressive or interlaced etc?

I deliver them HD (1920×1080) interlaced in .MOV format.

I know the results aren’t better, and ProRes is a better quality, you are correct, its just that the render time is killing me when I spend an hour watching paint dry for a 30 second commercial to render XD

Anyway, is there a website or something that compares the render speeds of the different G5 towers, because that’s what I really want to know is if I invest my money into a 8 core or 12 core tower how much time is it actually going to save me

Most all of the commercials I edit are pure graphics straight out of Photoshop, with VO’s in MP3 Format and music in AIFF. Otherwise if I do have video it is shot at 1920×1080 60i on a Canon XF300.

It was originally set to DVCPRO HD when I started I changed it to AppleProRes to get 1920×1080(square pixels) instead of 1220×1080 (non-square pixels) but then my render times went through the roof.
