Pretty much, Steve, I see all serious answers, here. In fact, most of them concur with your own advice. It seems to me they are indeed helpful. I fail to understand your grievance.

It’s funny. As I was doing Avid tutorials today, I was thinking how cool it would be to have some form of Media Composer lite on a tablet for a quick rough cut. It would be very easy to interface with the existing icons. I think I’d quite like it.

I’ve been very happy with my decision to go with Avid (though I also have Premiere), but from what you’ve said, my guess is CS 5.5 is where you really want to be. You will find the editing metaphors more like FCP and the integration with AE is extremely tight. My 2 cents, anyway.
I should add that both offer free trials, tough you will need your new machine to actually test them out.

Yes. I second this. I got the same tutorials, and I find them very useful. Hullfish covers basics very nicely at a professional level.

Hey Steve, I’m in a similar situation, and am migrating my own rig to Avid over the next year or so. It is a decision that makes complete sense for me in the environment I work in. In fact, I really should have brushed up on my Avid skills a few years ago, but I’ve been pretty lazy about it. For you, though, Premiere might be a better choice.
Quick questions:
What is your i/o card, what other hardware are you running, and what kind of Mac are you on? Or, I guess, what kind of hardware are you planning on upgrading to?
In your environment do you need to interact with other editors or editorial companies?

I have no idea what you should do. From the puzzler you put out, though, I WILL tell you what I would do. Plan A all the way. Buy storage. Convert. Multicam. Of course, I don’t know what the cost of storage means to you. Remember, though, that you can reuse the storage. I personally like to have tons of storage. I’m fond of G RAIDs because they are quiet, but I’d also recommend Mac Universe RAIDs, as well.

Ronald, I don’t quite understand your question. Do you want to convert old materials you have on VHS and Hi8 to DVD? If so, this is probably not the right place for this question. Not that I won’t help you. Also, what do you mean by extensions? File extensions? Are you trying to figure out a conversion format between your analog tapes and DVD? Or are you asking what file format you need to render to to go to DVD? Could you clarify what you are trying to do?

Craig, as I’ve said before, it’ll be cool if you are right. I think Larry Jordan’s expressed view tonight is right, and that a pretty good picture will emerge with the first or second update.

Andy, I most definitely share your opinion of FCP X, but to be fair to Craig, he has been very straightforward about acknowledging many of the downsides of FCP X. He definitely sees a lot more in it than I do–and, I agree, he is quite the booster–but over the long hall he has been fairly even-handed with his views. I say this in spite of his calling me both a profanity-prone caravan salesman, and, I believe, a cockroach. I’ve certainly learned a few things from discussing and/or debating with him (I have now called him a cockroach, as well) and his zeal has made me take extra looks at FCP X. Unfortunately, the extra looks did not help much.
