That letter adds some clarity to my deliberations. I’m not quite ready to destroy my OS X copy of CS5, since I’m still primarily relying on my 8 Core things Adobe. I’m thinking now that converting to a PC Mobile Workstation only for Avid (and a better eSATA connection) might be a bit of a reach. So maybe, this time around I’m staying Mac. I’m still mulling, though.

Ah, the “official” question. I don’t think there is anyplace that Apple acknowledges in print that the current Macbook Pro is capable of holding 16 G, but there are plenty of after-market places that feel comfortable selling you kits that officially do so (e.g., specifically naming the product). That is, in fact, the reason I posted the question here. Avid–in their qualifications list–has a note about more RAM always being better, as long as it meets with the manufacturer’s approval (bad paraphrase, I’m sure; but I’m too lazy to look it up right now).
HP and Dell both offer their mobile Workstations with 16G, and, from my POV, a far better set of i/o options. Really, what is holding me back from them at this point, is my dependence on FCS 3, the lovely glass track pad, and the overall light-weight elegance of the MacBook Pro. Hey Dennis, does Adobe offer any kind of cross-grade between OSes?

Bill, I’m way over it. You just have a nasty habit of making up wild metaphors that don’t actually mirror the situation. I was simply taking your misguided metaphor and putting it in proper perspective.

Phillip, thanks! That’s the kind of stuff I was looking for. MacSales is what I was thinking too. Yeah, I like to bop between programs, and do quite a bit of rendering. Right now, I’m thinking about a new i7 17, but I’m also thinking about a Del or HP mobile workstation which I’d use in conjunction with my current dual core i7. One of the attractive features on those are the beefy mobile Nvidia cards.

Me too. But I noticed a pretty big bump in rendering speed (as well as general overall better performance with multiple programs open) when I took mine up there. Maybe it was placebo, but I’d swear not.
I should really be upgrading my 2008 8 core this year, but with all of the mystery over the future of Macbook Pro, I’m holding off. I’m kind of on the edge of staying in Apple land for the long run. I’m even considering sidestepping into a Dell or HP Mobile workstation, though gravity will probably keep me in Apple land for sometime longer.

The bump in speed by going to quad core, plus thunderbolt. My current laptop then becomes my backup, and my current backup becomes my daughter’s. Needless to say, she’s pulling for my choosing a new MacBook pro.
