January 22, 2012 at 7:28 pmThis should be the time to upgrade my workstation, but with the fate of Mac Pros not clarified, I’m thinking about upgrading my laptop instead. Currently, my editing laptop is a 17″ i7 dual core Macbook Pro with 4 gigs of RAM. For the first time in a long time, I’m open to PCs as well (I’ve always liked the platform, btw; so that is not part of the issue.) The three laptops I’m looking at are:
a) 17″ Macbook Pro, b) Dell 17″ M6600, c) HP 8760
I’d like to stay between three and three and a half grand.
Here are a couple of questions, and I’d appreciate answers that anyone–especially anyone using any of these happens to have:
1) Will 16 gigs of RAM truly make a difference over 8? Has anyone successfully converted their Macbook Pro to 16 gigs (available in after-market) for use with Media Composer?
2) If you’ve worked on both, do you notice a difference in the performance of the Nvidia cards over the AMD cards in the Mac?
3)Does anyone have anything to say about performance differences between Mac and PC on these portable workstations?
4) Are people finding the PremiereColor IPS system at all useful for video work?
5) Are there staggering differences between the Quadro 3000M and the 4000M?
6) Mostly out of curiosity, is anyone using a Mobile Alienware?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. And, of course, anything else you might have to add.

January 22, 2012 at 8:21 pmOut of curiosity: why would you upgrade your MBP i7? It should run MC6 more than fine.

January 22, 2012 at 8:51 pmThe bump in speed by going to quad core, plus thunderbolt. My current laptop then becomes my backup, and my current backup becomes my daughter’s. Needless to say, she’s pulling for my choosing a new MacBook pro.

January 22, 2012 at 11:20 pmAll of the options would be fine with MC6. I’ve used previous versions with MacBook Pros, HP and 1 Beyond Systems laptops and never really noticed much difference with the various graphics cards or RAM. So, 8GB RAM should be fine. The one plus with the MacBook Pro for MC6 is that it supports native ingest of ProRes. Of course, if you use the older laptop as a back-up, then obviously there’s compatibility. The only thing I personally don’t like is that the 17″ MBPs are 1920×1200 resolution screens, which makes for very tiny text on screen.

January 22, 2012 at 11:54 pmJust a small correction, although I know Oliver knows this; both Mac and PC support “ingest” of ProRes, only the Mac would allow for render and transcode to ProRes should that be needed in your workflow.
