Laptop advice
This should be the time to upgrade my workstation, but with the fate of Mac Pros not clarified, I’m thinking about upgrading my laptop instead. Currently, my editing laptop is a 17″ i7 dual core Macbook Pro with 4 gigs of RAM. For the first time in a long time, I’m open to PCs as well (I’ve always liked the platform, btw; so that is not part of the issue.) The three laptops I’m looking at are:
a) 17″ Macbook Pro, b) Dell 17″ M6600, c) HP 8760
I’d like to stay between three and three and a half grand.
Here are a couple of questions, and I’d appreciate answers that anyone–especially anyone using any of these happens to have:
1) Will 16 gigs of RAM truly make a difference over 8? Has anyone successfully converted their Macbook Pro to 16 gigs (available in after-market) for use with Media Composer?
2) If you’ve worked on both, do you notice a difference in the performance of the Nvidia cards over the AMD cards in the Mac?
3)Does anyone have anything to say about performance differences between Mac and PC on these portable workstations?
4) Are people finding the PremiereColor IPS system at all useful for video work?
5) Are there staggering differences between the Quadro 3000M and the 4000M?
6) Mostly out of curiosity, is anyone using a Mobile Alienware?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. And, of course, anything else you might have to add.
