Lets say your cutting some dialogue and you want to cut out after person A says “food”, but you can’t because person B begins speaking over the word. This happens to me all the time and my first try is to find another instance of person A saying “food” in the clear and dropping it in. This tool would help make the match easier and save a bit of time. This also allows for a simple audio record of replacement lines without having to go to an ADR studio. It’s not a big deal, but I like it.
“Now, I hadn’t thought of that! I do that kind of cutting routinely, but I do wonder how effective it would be on single syllables, since it seems to work by reapportioning the gap space between hard attacks and decays. And, of course I wonder how effective it really is at all. With most tools like that, I end up back doing things by hand, but they are definitely fun to think about.

I don’t get your thinking. Why would this defacto be done in the same place, in the same rooms?

“It is a little curio/gimick feature. But so what? If it actually works, it will make my life easier 5-15 times a year. And it comes free in a suite I will buy whether it is there or not. Its not like Audition–however cool its Cool Edit foundation–is going to become my main DAW. I mean, how about a little perspective here.

[Lance Bachelder] “I’m far more impressed with the Logic 9 videos – never tried it but the editing features look fantastic. I agree the ADR thing could be cool – have to wait ’til NAB to see the full feature set etc.
“Logic is great. It has been my active DAW for the last three years. As a suite, it came with an amazing group of plugins and loop material. There are some PC DAWs I preferred more, once upon a time, though I stopped using those after settling in to FCP. I’m also paying with ProTools 10 now, but I haven’t had enough time to monkey with it to see how I like it compared to Logic. I don’t think of Audition as a DAW, particularly, but as a adjunct like Soundtrack Pro. If I remember correctly, Audition is built on a very good Audio Editor from the ’90’s called Cool Edit.

“I’m not confused. I’ve been around big events for far longer than you have. I’ve been in all sorts of trucks. I have a friend who operates his own very nice, very large truck. And, in other parts of my career, I’ve spent quite a bit of time mixing down analog sound myself. I really am not confused about trucks, remotes, or sound mixing. Really.
I’ll tell you, though, what is confusing me, Tony; it is that I haven’t the slightest idea what it is you are talking about. This started as a brief comment about ISOs, and has mushroomed into some sort of conversation that makes me feel like, well, I’m on mushrooms. Any part of the miscommunication I might be responsible for, I’m really sorry.

Tony, I’m afraid I sometimes get a bit lost in conversation with you. You were talking about a hypothetical “job with 20 mics or more without a truck there to mix it,” to which you added, “I wouldn’t want to work that job anyway.” You didn’t specify what kind of job, other than its a remote, so I don’t know why you are asking me to guess.
Whatever format you were or were not talking about, it involved a remote truck, and I was simply agreeing with you that twenty ISOs coming off of a truck without anyone riding herd on them would be daunting, and probably unnecessary, and though I can imagine such things exist, I personally have not seen them.

Yep. Both sides have been attempting to lay down legal precedent for the last decade, and the net neutrality wars are about to commence. In the US, there is currently no regulatory structure protecting last-mile consumers. But you bring up net neutrality as a topic, and everybody yawns and thinks you’re some kind of yuppy porn-protector. There are billions of dollars at stake.

“Hear, hear. Also, the people who people much of the rest of my life–both family and business–have little tolerance for or interest in anything at all to do with the actual mechanics of editorial, and the attendant software/hardware. Nice to have a place to go where people are actually interested in such things.
