I doubt it’s the only way, I was simply saying a way I think it might work. If that’s a problem or if it doesn’t work, you might have to try another way, I just don’t know one. I’m sure other people do.

So, the particle effect is probably the harder one. Lets take the hand in that video as an example. I’d take a shot of the hand on a green screen, then I’d put some sort of texture that has an edge like I want and use it as a luma matte for the hand. Then I’d take particular, put it underneath and make the emitter the same width as the hand with the particles the same color as the hand and adjust the physics to my liking. Pre-comp that whole thing in a big comp and put that comp in my main comp and animate the position. It’s gonna take some time tweaking the contrast/color/masks/whatever of the texture and the hand and the particles to get it to look right.

For the double exposure, just take a shot of someone on a green screen, key them and use them as a alpha matte for the footage layer. The true detective intro has multiple layers of footage blended together with feathered masks and such as well so it looks a little more complicated, but it really isn’t.

I believe in mocha not all your tracking area has to be in frame. You could have the part that leaves frame just leave frame and extend the area over what is still in frame. It’s been a while since I used it, but I seem to remember that being a feature, I could be wrong.

  • Position and masks are all you need. Create a mask, press ‘M’ and Shift+’P’ and you’ll have access to every keyframe you need.

  • I just tried it too and it aligned the text under the path. That’s crazy. I’m not sure I ever knew you could create a box with the text tool, I always just clicked. Sascha, if that’s your problem, looks like it’s solved. How’d you figure it out?

What happens if you uncheck File Extension under Match File Properties?

  • Man, you guys have a complicated workflow. I don’t really have an answer to your question, sorry. But I am really curious why you guys have 3 cloned RAIDs, but you only copy the project file. Is your media already on all three? Why not just use a RAID 10, 5 or 6?

Yes and no. Premiere’s Title Maker is pretty good and when you get used to it, you can make some pretty great looking stuff. However, it’s not built for making animations. For that, you’ll need to learn After Effects which is a whole other bag of cats. There are great plugins for After Effects and Premiere that make it easy, but the ones built for AE will give you a lot more animation, but you’ll still have to learn the program basics. Word to the wise: don’t try to use AE without learning the basics at least.

That amount of RAM is pretty small for editing, but I don’t think it should be too much of a problem (I am used to more than 16GB, so I don’t have a lot of experience with limited RAM). If you’re having problems with that macbook pro, then a new will very likely help. If your external drive is plugged in using USB 2.0, that could be your problem, in which case I’d try a new drive with USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt if you can before you do anything else. Alternatively, you could transcode all your footage to something easier and smaller, maybe even SD to edit with proxies. Transcoding as an option will depend on the amount of footage you have and the amount of time you’ll have were you can be doing something else where your computer will be free to transcode, you might do a few tests to see how long that will take and how editing that footage goes.

  • Walter, I don’t think what your suggesting will help. Each individual clip doesn’t need any stabilizing.

John, the only thing I could think of would be to take the first frame of each clip and bring them in as an image sequence, then stabilize that and somehow reference each frame in an expression with each clip having the same layer number as the frame number it’s in in the image sequence, though figuring that out (if it is possible) would probably take more time than just lining them all up manually. Though, if you do this all the time, it might be worth taking the time, assuming it’s possible.
