June 29, 2011 at 1:21 am in reply to: Walter Biscardi walks through PPro from an FCP perspectiveReally looking forward to your look at Avid. It’s a different beast, and will not have as many direct similarities. I don’t know your level of expertise with Avid, but if you have specific questions about how to accomplish certain things, by all means, give me a call or email me:

It “works” except the mixer gets no handles. It’s really not a great solution. Has anybody played with Automatic Duck’s plugin?

June 28, 2011 at 8:17 pm in reply to: Walter Biscardi walks through PPro from an FCP perspectiveI’ve been computer agnostic for a long time. My last computer was a PC running Avid, but when it came time to upgrade I finally went Mac because I figured sooner or later I’d need to be able to run FCP. That was 2 years ago, and I never had to run FCP (even though I own it). Now it looks like I probably never will.
Seems like I usually get 4 years or so out of a workstation. So I’ll probably go PC the next go around too, in a year or two.

June 28, 2011 at 5:48 am in reply to: Can Avid 5.5 & Final Cut 7 run on the same system?Me too. I have CS5.5, FCP 7.0.3, and MC 5.5.2 on the same machine. The thing I wouldn’t do, though, is upgrade to 10.6.8 just yet. Those f’ing OS updates almost always break something. Never sure why people are so quick to pull the trigger until they know if it’ll work.

A couple weeks ago I attended the Adobe Road Show and spoke with the Black Magic folks. Although the rep didn’t say so specifically, he strongly implied with a bit of a wink that Black Magic and Avid might have something to announce with the next release. Total speculation, and you wouldn’t want to build a business on it, but I think Avid is sincere about opening itself up to third party devices. Of course the time frame is anybody’s guess.

Yeah, kind of like putting all those clips in a bin. Maybe someday somebody will think of that. Oh wait…

Yeah, I haven’t use the software yet, but coming from Avid and even FCP 7, if you had a long clip in the viewer, it was hard to scan through it also. At least in the skimmer window you have all those thumbnails to help you find your spots. It appears to be a bit of a eyesore, but it seems functional, once you get used to it.
I’ll be buying FCP X in a few weeks to mess around with it. It definitely seems like it’ll be fun to play with and I’m sure I’ll find uses for it.
