  • Divine retribution? – Apple update reportedly breaks Adobe’s Mercury Playback Engine

According to several post on the Abobe forums, the latest Snow Leopard 10.6.8 update appears to break Adobe’s Mercury Playback Engine on the NVidia cards running Cuda. Here’s the link: https://forums.adobe.com/message/3761472#3761472

If I had to guess I’d suggest that the numerous Adobe users who’ve posted may want to try reinstalling their NVidia drivers, because updates do have a tendency to corrupt drivers from time to time. But who knows? Could this be payback for Adobe’s coddling of FCP customers?

It also wrecked the Kona drivers, too. Oh fun!

Well, that really is a common occurrence when running an OS update. So, maybe that does verify my diagnosis that this is just SOP (i.e. standard operating procedure) and not an attempt to get even?.

Avid always recommends that NOBODY update their OS until they’ve had a chance to certify it. They’ve been pretty good at certifying OS updates in a timely manner lately.

I’m sure it’s SOP. Nvidia, Adobe, Blackmagic et al have plenty of opportunity to test against new OS releases before they go public, but apparently that’s too hard. Some of the stuff Apple does drives me up the wall, but this sort of thing falls at the feet of the developers, not Apple.
