November 11, 2011 at 2:23 am in reply to: Scopes don’t reflect changes when I apply a color effect…Thanks for the tip Tim, it looks like you are correct. Copy and pasting the media into a new sequence seems to solve my problem. I’m embarrassed I didn’t think of that myself. Anyway…the scopes in the reference monitor now return realtime feedback when it comes to color adjustments. Not only does it work in a new sequence with different settings but it also works in a new sequence with the identical Blackmagic setting I had in my original sequence.
I still have some hair on my head Mr Kolb, thanks to you.
Thanks again

November 11, 2011 at 1:19 am in reply to: Scopes don’t reflect changes when I apply a color effect…Hi Tim, Thanks for taking the time to respond. I am using the 4×3 29.97 Blackmagic Uncompressed sequence setting.
Any ideas on what might be causing this problem for me ?
Thanks again

HI Todd,
Thanks for that link. Explains a lot.
Todd, Any Idea why a DNxHD clip won’t play in Premiere? I have of course downloaded the codec from the Avid. I believe it was Tim that suggested I download QT 7 since all I had was X but that doesn’t seem to solve my problem. I get nothing but Black (with no audio) in Premiere when I import the DNxHD clip. Mind you, I can import this same clip into FCP 7 and it runs fine. I must be doing something wrong here, I just can’t figure it out.
Also… I had asked about the audio meter showing levels during analog capture. I am using a Decklink Extreme 3D card. Should my audio meter be showing my incoming audio signal when I have the capture tool open? Again, I seem to think I am doing something wrong. I am using CS5 by the way, on a Mac Pro 12 core.
Many thanks for your help Todd

Thanks Jon,
What you say about about levels not making a difference during a digital format capture makes sense. I completely understand that. My specific situation deals more with analog (actually old VHS) capture into Premiere and I am running the audio through a Mackie Mixer before it gets to the Blackmagic Card.
From my experience with Media Composer years ago, I could swear levels could be monitored during analog capture. I know that FCP for example won’t show your levels jumping during the actual capture but levels are shown while the capture tool is open so you at least know your system is receiving the audio from your deck. In Premiere, I am seeing no audio levels within the Premiere interface while I am capturing or even before I hit the capture button. Just as a side note… Audio is in fact being captured since I can play back the captured clip and hear it. Now I do realize Premiere is not FCP or MC but it seems like this particular feature should be in their somewhere. Any ideas??
If this is in fact the way it is and incoming audio cannot be monitored, I will definitely put in a a feature request. That is a good suggestion Jon. 🙂
Many Thanks Jon

John, Jon, Jacob and Tim… A simple question about the audio meter within Premiere… My meter shows levels while playing down the timeline. That works great.
The meter doesn’t move while playing the source monitor and I can’t get it to show any audio while capturing through the BlackMagic card. I am confident the system is connected properly since I can capture within FCP 7 and I do see levels within FCP. I’m guessing I am doing something wrong here. Any ideas???
As always, Thanks guys

Great Story Jacob !!! Love that

Hey Tim,
Adobe works hard to put out a solid product and for some odd reason people don’t take it seriously. Nobody seems to joke about Photoshop or AE… In my mind Premiere should be treated the same. This latest release is killer. When FCPX was released and many posters here on the Cow were considering jumping ship it shocked me to see people up in the air as to which way to go. The answer seemed pretty obvious to me…. Adobe Premiere !!! And the kicker of the whole thing… most of these posters already owned Premiere. Not really sure why there was (and in some cases continues to be) so much confusion. I will say there was a side of me that thought maybe Adobe should have re-branded Premiere, maybe give it a new name and promote the hell out of it when it became 64 bit. It’s possible that would have helped shed this silly negative impression some people have of it. Either way though, I am happy with it.
Anyway, as for your question about QT… I don’t have 7 installed. Only X, and the DNxHD does play back in Quicktime X. Your thinking that maybe having 7 installed might allow Premiere to work with this codec?
I will hopefully install QT7 tonight . I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks again for chiming in

HI Tim and Jacob,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I too have become a fan of Premiere. So many amazing features. Adobe really doesn’t get the credit it deserves in the pro video world.
As for the colors that show up above the clips… I hear ya. I was just a little put off at first when I saw the Black Magic Sequence (which gives me Broadcast monitoring capability) had a red bar while if I created a sequence based on the actual footage it was a yellow. What you say about ignoring the red bar makes sense though. As Tim did mention..
I will keep my eyes open for a Black Magic update in the future, maybe that red will be a yellow in no time.Do either of you guys have any input on the whole DNxHD question?? Codec is downloaded. DNxHD footage runs in FCP but for some reason I see and hear nothing while importing it into Premiere.
Thanks again guys

Thanks for all the info Bob, As Always you, very helpful.
Just out curiosity… what slot should my Decklink HD Extreme card be in? I had this Mac Pro (2.66 12 core with 24 gigs of RAM) built by a VAR so I hope they didn’t make a mistake. It looks as if the card is installed in slot 2. It takes up slot 3 as well b/c of the HDMI ports. Slot 1 is taken up by the ATI Radeon 5870 video card.
in the meantime I will follow your (and Richards) advice and work on getting another deck in here to see if I am still experiencing audio drift.
Many thanks once again

Many thanks on the suggestions Richard and Andrew. I still haven’t picked up the sync generator yet since this is actually a personal project and not a paid client job.
Richard, I don’t have another deck to capture from unfortunately. I do have a DVD player I can capture from. My question to you is… how will that help me to determine if this is an internal issue with the Black Magic card? Unless this is an issue with the VHS deck which I doubt… I’m guessing I will have this same issue from another source (in this case DVD). What’s your take on that if you don’t mind me asking?
Andrew, what you are saying (about the 4 or 5 frames off after about an hour) is right on point. That is exactly what I am experiencing. Short captures look great, long captures show a drift. As you also pointed out the deck I have does have the capability of taking a reference signal.
In the meantime I’m probably just buy the sync generator anyway b/c if Mr. Zelin comes on here and sees me struggling with a $300 purchase… I’m in big trouble 🙂
Thanks again guys for taking the time to help me out.
