You’ll need to get it to a Panasonic repair shop. It’s not a big repair but it does require opening the camera if the filter wheel has jammed — odds are it’s the plastic wheel that cracked. The labor cost is higher than the part (always the way…) but it should be a fast turnaround IF they have the part in stock.

Hope you don’t get caught out while your camera is down,

March 7, 2011 at 9:38 pm in reply to: Gear being stolen on a global scale

As the Production Manager at Visual Edge, one of the companies that had the gear stolen, I can honestly say that I’d be all for GPS chips, lo-jacks, exploding dye packs or a Rottweiler installed in the cameras.

    🙂

In all seriousness, this is a major problem for rental companies in this industry. Not only was the theft the result of a very well planned scheme the thieves themselves knew what they were looking for and had knowledge of how our industry works. This wasn’t a typical robbery of a production truck left unlocked outside a location, this was the definition of an organized crime.

The bigger shock for us was discovering that this wasn’t a one off theft, this was part of a string. And the police here were very surprised to find out how long that string has been going on for — the only reason I could think of was that this industry has for years been so paranoid and terrified of giving their competitors an edge that it made no sense to publicize the loss of equipment. The difference in this case is that I was pissed off and decided that I wanted to make sure the bastards that did us don’t get to do it to anyone else.

November 24, 2009 at 3:03 pm in reply to: Issues with Back focus on Sony Ex-1

There was a previous thread on this issue but with the EX3 — if you scroll down the main page you’ll find it.

The Z7U has been widely reported as having back focus problems (we just had ours replaced by Sony with no argument whatsoever) and now the EX1/3 appears to be in the same boat. I’d have to agree with the Jay’s comment above, this screams computer/software glitch to me.

I also heartily second Noah’s immediate reaction: trade out the camera ASAP.

November 20, 2009 at 3:12 pm in reply to: Serious Backfocus Problems on Sony EX3

We have an EX3 but haven’t run into this issue — however, the Z7U that we HAD did have this problem and we were certainly not alone. Same issue: set the backfocus, zoom out, focus would drift and the shot would be soft. We just had the camera replaced (as did another company in town, both of their Z7Us displayed the problem right out of the box) and the new camera doesn’t have the drifting issue.

Odd to see the same problem across model lines from the same manufacturer…

November 20, 2009 at 3:05 pm in reply to: Duel Adapter Drivers

Dave, I just saw your question after responding to a similar one further up the board — Duel apparently stated that they are not going to support Snow Leopard and have no intention of doing so in the future. I’m afraid you’ll have to find another way to ingest footage from the cards unless there’s a change of heart. Sorry to be the bearer or bad (albeit not first-hand, so you might want to confirm with Duel…) news.

November 20, 2009 at 3:03 pm in reply to: New Snow Leopard P2 Drivers

I saw reference to this on a couple of forums shortly after Snow Leopard was released but I don’t have first-hand confirmation: Duel apparently stated that they will not support Snow Leopard AT ALL. They are not working on drivers and will not be doing so in the future. I’m afraid if you want to upgrade you’ll have to find another workflow for offloading footage.

I just hope it’s not something that neuters or duplicates the 800 we have. Oh, wait, we’re still waiting on that being delivered. I’d just like Sony to be able to DELIVER their products to more than just the networks and their major dealers.

I saw a PDF document recently online that was for an EX1-R — the document had to do with clearing electronic specs for code, don’t remember if it had any actual camera specs in it.

October 7, 2009 at 9:32 pm in reply to: P2 artifacts

Connie, we had an issue with kernel panics when using the Duel Adapter with our Macbook Pro bought in January, although we were using Shotput to offload the footage from the cards. The combination of the 4GB of RAM in the computer + Duel Adapter + Shotput appeared to be lethal, so we just decided to keep using the older laptop with 2GB of RAM for all P2 offloads.

Dan from Imagine Products (the makers of Shotput — fantastic program, by the way) did a lot of work trying to get to the bottom of the issue as it appeared common and came to the conclusion that the Duel Adapter combined with the additional RAM was the culprit. Sure enough our older Macbook with 2GB of RAM works flawlessly with the Duel Adapter and Shotput Pro.

As for the artifacts, sorry, no clue what could be causing that. Are you using the newer E series cards?

And for under $1,000! Shall we have a ceremonial Duel Adapter burning?
