Serious Backfocus Problems on Sony EX3
Hi there,
I wanted to bring up an issue regarding backfocus problems on the Sony EX3.
I own the camera incl. the Fujinon Wideangle lens.
Whenever changing the lens I have to change the backfocus electronically in the camera. This is the problem. When using a siemens star and following the exact guidelines in the manual you don’t get a perfect backfocus. In fact you can get a totally screwed backfoucs if lighting is not perfect.I brought this problem to the attention of sony Europe and it’s been tested there in a lab in London twice. They didn’t agree there was a problem and sent it back with a firmeware update that didn’t fix anything. Then I tested at Munich’s Sony Center with me personally there and then after two hours of tests in a lab it was 100% confirmed with two different cameras that the backfoucs function didn’t work properly and couldn’t be fixed. This problem was now forwarded to Sony Japan but I haven’t heard back from them since. I guess they hope this is a minor issue which in my eyes it is not.
These are the problems:
When zoomin in on something let’ s say 3m away and you zoom out to wide angle the focus goes slightly soft. This can be seen clearly on a pixel to pixel enlarged HD monitor when having a siemens star at the center. This is a major problem when shooting open iris interviews for example. There is no fix to this as of now.
The problem occurs on both the standard and the wide angle lens.
Has anybody else noticed this problem. I was shooting a film for cinema this year and it became a big issue in post when I was shooting open iris low light scenes.
Any feedback appreciated.
Best wishes
