I’m a little confused by the hookup chain. Can you list each hookup step, and where everything falls into the chain?

From what you described, it sounds like you will need two Multibridges.

I’ve used the HDMI out occassionally on my Multibridge Extreme. What issues specifically are you having? What resolution/framerate are you trying to display? What are you hooking up to it? What output setting are you using?

Have you contacted Blackmagic? They will sell you a replacement. I would buy two. I’ve had my Multibridge Extreme for almost 3 years, and I’ve already lost one power supply.

You will always see a little bit of the “interlacing problem” on the LMD-2050W. The 2030 is a bit more pronounced, as it’s lower end on the chain. Remember these monitors are progressive, so they have to process an interlaced signal into progressive, and then in the case of standard definition, up-scale it to the panel resolution. The LMD-2050W has better software than the 2030. It’s not perfect, but we’ve been getting good results on ours (the 2050W) which is hooked up to a Decklink card. We’re not doing anything different than using their output presets. I’m sure you’ve done this, but output color bars and calibrate the monitor to them so that you’re all setup. We haven’t seen any bad color tearing. It makes me wonder if you haven’t calibrated it to bars.

To me still, nothing compares to a good reference CRT. That’s why we’ve stocked up here before they started to stop selling them. You can find great deals on eBay, and JVC still has new standard and multi-definition CRTs available.

The Sony LMD series is pretty good…I’ll stop there at pretty good. The 2050W and larger models do a great job.

I’ll tell you what though, I was extremely impressed with the new Master Series models that they released to replace their master CRT series. They were exact match for match against the CRTs to my eyes…I just can’t affort $24,000 for the 24 inch model. Sony finally figured it out…but the price point is just nuts right now. I hope the LED technology and software from the new Master LCDs makes it’s way down into the LMD series in a couple of years…Sony will corner the market for professional LCDs at that point.

The reason this setting is there is that when you turn off Desktop Mirroring, you reduce the processing necessary by the CPU on playback. Since playout thru your video output is the first priority (in most cases) turning off Desktop display makes sure you have as much system resources as possible available for playout. Comes in handy when you’re doing realtime effects, and haven’t rendered yet. Or if you’re on a slower system , but using higher end codecs, such as ProRes.

    Some great options out there:

    – I prefer the Sony LMD-2050W, not the 2030. Definitely better than the 2030.
    – The Panasonic panel mentioned above is great…in HD mode. The software in this panel does a horrid job with standard definition. I own the Sony panel above and standard def looks outstanding.
    – There are still some JVC 17inch HD CRT’s out there. Get the analog HD input card – handles every SD and HD resolution and framerate. I own one of those too, and we put it in our color correction/main edit suite.

If you can get an HD CRT, get that – it will still blow away current LCD’s for color critical work. The current Sony LMD LCD series is great…but our JVC CRT still beats it. We use a discontinued Sony 36 inch consumer HD CRT (16:9) as our client monitor. Some of the broadcast engineers around here love it – you can calibrate it to bars and have no problem – plus it’s a 1080i tube with analog and HDMI HD in.

The JVC model we have is the DT-V1710CGU. We bought direct from JVC when they sold their NAB show stock 2 years ago and saved almost 50% on the thing.

Here’s an example of a product that would do what’s being talked about:

    https://svconline.com/mag/avinstall_chyron_chytv/

Also, using any of Blackmagic Design’s I/O boards, via hardware and software, you can superimpose anything.

We lead our customers away from doing that, but the fact is that the manufacturers of these products haven’t really grasped the possible implications of what they are selling.

That said, there are products on the market that allow you to display a feed of video, and add your information and branding around it. It’s very useful, when used in a legal way. For example, if your a city government, and you want to pipe your city cable channel into your courthouse, but also combine a list of upcoming court cases for a courtroom – volia – supply the feed, the data feed, run it through a box like Chyron ChyTV, and send it to your signage display.

July 14, 2008 at 8:26 pm in reply to: Is my Monitor fried?

Does it attempt to do a degauss at all? Does it sound like something electrical is happening. It might be your tube, however it might also be a board that has gone bad, and the monitor is shutting off the tube as a safety measure. You might want to call the closest Sony Broadcast center in your region. It’s worth getting an estimate. If it’s going to cost more than the current value of the the monitor, sell it for parts and but a used one if you don’t want an LCD based product.

The used monitor market is filled with great inventory at the moment.

Guys, though you are raising a legal question here, what you’re not realizing is there are digital signage products that have been sold the past few years that allow you to pipe in a signal, add your own branding around the screen, and supplement it with your own information feeds. Heck, even national hotel chains have done this with certain signage displays and in-room feeds. The products are already on the market.

Legal question aside, do a Google search for digital signage products, you will start to get in the direction you’re looking for.

  • When I saw the 700 and the EX3 at NAB, I was excited. I haven’t been extremely excited by a Sony camera in a while. I take that back, XDCAM HD really excited me…I just want those cameras to have a 2/3 inch chipset. The F35 is awesome also.

Back to subject…I think Sony has a potential hit with the 700…but it needs everything else we want in it first, if the PDW-530 features were in the 700, with the 4:2:2 color space and the 50mbps data rate…oh I’d love that so much.
