A ghetto workaround for maximizing your screen real estate during colour grading in FCPX 10.0.8 or less is to:
1. show your video scopes and timeline index.
2 Click and drag the FCPX window off the screen a little to the far right.
3. Now drag the left side of the FCPX window even farther left.
4. Shift the entire FCPX window back to the left effectively hiding the Event Browser and Timeline Index.

Note: you should see a little bit of the Timeline Index on screen so you can drag clips around and have the timeline shift horizontally.
