Firestore files ARE NOT usable under Lion. Not only that, but Final Cut Pro 7 can’t even read them anymore. I’ve talked to both Apple and the Firstore folks about this problem, and keeping the fingers crossed for a solution soon.

As someone who has used Lion for almost all of the betas, I disagree with a bug chunk of that review. I do think there’s some usability issues that need to be worked out, but many features, such as sandboxing and Versions, will be a huge boon for productivity and stability reasons. It feels just as fast, if not faster, than Snow Leopard. I wish they had done a bit more in adding new stuff, but I don’t think it’s a *dumbing* down of the operating system.

There’s no solution as of yet. You can follow the main Apple discussion forum thread here. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3132042?start=0&tstart=0

I’ve submitted bugs to Apple about this problem and sent test files as well, so keep your fingers crossed. . It has to do with the fact that Apple rewrote all of their existing codecs for Final Cut Pro X (and Lion) using a different framework. So something they did broke the Firestore, either because the Firestore wasn’t implementing HDV correctly, or Apple messed something up. The big problem is that in Lion, you can’t even view the files in Quicktime, as Lion as the new HDV codec by default. So while I don’t believe there is a solution yet, both parties are aware of the problem.

Can’t believe I missed this in my Google searching. It does, but I think using the Zoom to layer actually makes things a bit easier. I’m still working through the easiest method, and even may make a tutorial myself out of it.

Thanks for the post! Looks like a great effect and I’ll be trying it out soon.

Leaving it interlaced did the trick and putting on a deinterlace filter – thanks so much!

Going to do a bunch of tests on this file to get the best quality, but what I should be doing to get the best quality is leave the field dominance set to none in final cut, then render it to progressive in Compressor, correct?

  • Wow the whole viewing Canvas at 100% just blew my mind. Always see people saying you really need an actual reference monitor, but never saw it in practice!

I’m trying your suggesting CBR settings and leaving it interlaced now. Just to make sure, leaving the footage interlaced means under Frame Controls, “Output Fields” is set to “Same as source”, correct? I will let you know how that works.

In the future, if I leave Field Dominance set to “None” for my Final Cut Sequence, and if the sequence is set to Apple ProRes 422, that would mean my sequence would already be Progressive, correct? (It’s been tricky for me to figure this out because there’s never actually a toggle in FC or Compressor that specifically says this means Progressive, and this means interlaced!)

Haha I did right after I posted, not sure how I missed it. It seems like if you were very precise with the edge collision you could do it, but I was more looking for a third party filter or something similar.

  • Enter the Time Machine interface, navigate to the file you want to delete, right click it, and select “Delete all items from backup.”

This is an all or nothing approach, as it will get rid of all revisions of the file. I’m not aware of a way to selectively delete files. If it’s something you just want to get rid of older revisions for, I’d delete it from the backup, then immediately start a new Time Machine backup to get the latest file back in there.

Thanks for the reply – that sort of helps, but isn’t quite what I’m after. Because I have about 20 motion files, all of which were created by sending the clip from final cut, all of these motion files still have the original audio. What I want to be able to do is re-edit the new audio in the Final Cut timeline, but then have all of the Motion files update to contain the new audio. Sort of as if I was sending those motion clips with the new audio from the FC timeline to Motion again, but retain all of the motion graphics and adding the new audio.

I’m not sure that this is possible, but would definitely save me a ton of time in this current project if I can figure it out!
