[James Ewart] “When FCPX says “move to trash” does it actually move it to a trash can somewhere or delete it forever?”

Anything “moved to trash” goes into a trash folder in the Library package. It stay there (available if you hit undo) until you close the project. Then the folder, and its content, is deleted.

  • [Bill Davis] ” there were something like 170 effect shots in Focus – far more than I would have suspected since it’s more a real world, “heist genre-ish comedy drama” as opposed to a space opera or some Michael Bey deal where you expect every other shot to be VFX dependent. “

I’m still surprised at how many FX shots are in pretty much every studio movie these days. As we cut trailers, we usually get unfinished features. Even a simple romantic comedy these days usually has a bunch of FX shots. Pickups, reshot scenes where they shot a backplate so they wouldn’t need to go back to the location, etc. When we get dailies, there’s a whole lot of static shot’s of interior and exterior locations. Action films… seems like every other shot has some sort of VFX component.

    Nothing is real man!!!! lol

  • Looking forward to hearing more about this as the cat slowly crawls out of the bag. 🙂 Ya know what would make me very happy, in a perverse way? If Apple talks about it, sticks it on the FCP page, but doesn’t go media blitz crazy with it.

Just like, “Yes.This feature was cut in X. We were pleased to be a part of the film, and here’s some information about it. You can hear more about it from the people involved, who had a good experience. It works, and will continue to improve. Also… here’s a few more things happening.”

Steady as she goes. Kind of what they’ve been doing actually. 🙂

  • [Steve Connor] “I think I may add that as a feature request for “duration” in the timeline index, that way you could see any 1 or 2 frame edits in the list.”

Good request, but I doubt that’s what happened here. In fact, I know what happened even though I had nothing to do with it. The source of that section is a cut feature or trailer, so it’s an existing cut that got missed (the clip was 1 frame too long or slipped one frame). The online editor/QC should have caught that.

    Don’t ask me how I know… 😉

[Brett Sherman] “I believe they don’t want to give up their edge in knowledge of the ins and outs of the software they use. And they’ve been working the same way for a longer time and are less inclined to try a new way. “

Very true. I’m literally surrounded by this. And I understand the feeling… kind of. 🙂 In an environment where you’re expected to be good and fast at the same time changing tools can be scary.

Can’t really blame the NLE for that… It’s not a software issue, it the “wetware” 😉

[Robin S. Kurz] “The only relevant question is where will the clip end up?? If going back to DV or DVD or any other source for playback ON A TV, then having fields is A GOOD THING. If going to e.g. Youtube or just your computer, simply export as PROGRESSIVE in any given codec and it will look that same in each and every one. Since yes, interlaced material will look “crappy” on a progressive monitor.”

Which was why I suggested he change the project setting, even if I got the terminology wrong. 😉 I guess I just assume that these days everything will be viewed on computer screen… Also, in my case, we get DV footage occasionally, but it’s for offline and will eventually be redone from the HD master. So I always run a progressive project to get rid of the interlacing for presentations etc. I suppose I shouldn’t assume that this is always the case…

[Morten Slemdal] “I thought fcpx understood if I should have (i) or (p), from the first Clip added to the timeline.

anyway, I hope this is the case, and that everything will be great in the end.”

It does, but DV is interlaced and I’ve found that changing the project timebase to progressive (if it’s available) can help with this issue. Worth a shot. 🙂
