Sorry, maybe you should post this in the FCP forum. I have never worked with FCP, so I am not familiar with it. MAC’s don’t like me for some reason, I think they smell my PC on me.

I really feel that video levels are your problem. Did you look at a scope to see what your white levels are? Alswo check vectorscop-e and make sure no colors are outside the circle. Also make sure the chroma on scope is not too far into sync.

My guess is that your video was too hot. If you created the white letters in photoshop or some other computer program you need to check the levels. never create at RGB of 255.255.255 create at 235.235.235 this will make the video levels within broadcast standards. Same with blacks never create black at 0.0.0 create at 16.16.16 and you should be safe and not have problems with projectors or tape playback.

I was impressed. Could it be better? Sure, would I have tried to change anything to make it so? Not a chance.

Just remember you should never be 100% satisfied with any project, but you have to turn it loose sometime for the public. There is nothing in this you should not be exceedingly proud of.

I loved it, and it definitely tells the story. After all, that is what we do, tell a story, and you did that very well.

Emotionally it worked, and got me teared up.

    Bob and Mark,
I lost my last job and partner in the business because I kept saying Avid wasn’t ready for broadcast finalization. That was 1996. I finally got into non-linear editing for digital signage in 1999. Quality is not quite as important, although the term broadcast quality IMO has totally lost its meaning. When you can broadcast home videos as a main source of a program, and anyone with a home computer is able to create video from their home movie camera. Broadcast Quality is a total misnomer.

I have now retired and I can sit back and say, I gave it all I could to keep quality number one in my career.

Thanks guys for the opportunity to vent.

    Check out https://AdtecInc.com
They have systems for insertion using predetermined times and cable sensors. Note: the cable sensors are usually stripped from the output to subscribors, so it usually has to be set with the cable companies to get that subscription to sniff as you may say the sensors. Adtec will help you with this information.

I always had great results with Sound Ideas. If you get the full set of volumes, you should have just about everything you will ever need.
It isn’t cheap, but well worth the money.

There are many aspects of editing commercials and many levels of editors. There are the button pushers, that take the storyboard and follow with no input just follow what the director tells you. There are more creative editors that will make suggestions to the director of cuts that might work better, or sometimes even change order of shots if you feel it would flow better. The main thing is to not just cut scenes together but make those cuts transparent, feel every cut has a purpose, and how that cut is done to make that purpose feel right. If a cut doesn’t work for you, suggest an alternative, give input. Nothing ever storyboarded that I ever cut was set in stone til after I chiseled a little of it. Never feel you have no input.
Don’t go so far as to argue your point, see if the director is responsive, if not then he deserves what he gets. If he is responsive and just doesn’t agree, then you have done your part.
I made a career of editing commercials and I loved it. Long forms were not my favorite, because I don’t have an attention span long enough for them. I reach a point where I start thinking I’m going to be doing this project for the rest of my life.

I hope this helps you to feel better about yourself.
