There is nothing really non-standard about these sizes. Basically, the reason for the encoded vertical sizes not being actual 480, 720, or 1080 lines is that the tape the trailers are delivered on have letterboxing. The typical frame sizes for storing video on tape are 720×480, 960×720, 1280×720, 1280×1080, 1440×1080, and 1920×1080. But often times, the actual images on the tape only consumes a certain number of lines if the original source was film, which can use a custom aspect ratio. So in the case of the 1080p trailer, the remaining 352 lines were likely black in order to letterbox the content to conform to the tape standards. And when the tape was encoded, there was no reason for the compressionist to compress and waste bits on the letterboxes for web output, so they cropped those out.

Yeah, if you’re source is anamorphic while editing you will need to compress to a square pixel size when encoding for the web with most codecs.

I’d recommend either ffmpegX or VisualHub. You should be able to encode to whatever MPEG-1 size you wish with those apps and they are very inexpensive.

Real Media in general does not allow transcoding. So any application with a Real badge will not work for this. But an app like ffmpegX should be able to help.

NO, QT PRO WILL DO THIS! I write that in CAPS because I stated the same thing above. If you export from QT Pro, Mac or PC, and select the Movie to AVI option, DV25 is in the list of codecs that are given as an option. This is the reason why no one (except MainConcept maybe) really offers a product for this, as DV25 is one of the original QT/AVI 2.0 codecs. And the reason why MPEG StreamClip offers the option for DV25 in AVI is because all MPEG SC does on the PC is link to the QT exporter component; yes, even on the PC. If the MPEG SC AVI exporter were a “true” (as in written for) windows AVI exporter, it would have the ability to export to other formats like VirtualDub can.

Yep, that codec shouldn’t be a problem (I just tested a few WMV8/WMA9 videos on my MBP to be sure and they played fine). I have the F4M Studio version installed on my machine, but the version you bought should work as well with this format. Like Danny says, try restarting. If that doesn’t work, then would suggest using either an application called VisualHub ( https://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/tryit.php ) if your frame rate is standard 29.97 or 25fps and convert it to DV. If not, then you will need something more featured, such as Episode ( https://www.flip4mac.com/episode.htm ). As always, I would recommend you try the demo before purchasing these products to ensure compatibility.

If you convert to AVI from QT Pro (movie to AVI from the Export menu), then there shouldn’t be a compatibility issue on Windows machines. Windows Media Player, and I imagine VLC as well, should play the resulting AVI fine. The codecs offered in QT’s AVI exporter component are by default installed on Windows systems.

My guess at what you are really trying to do, based on your note of VLC, is to create an MPEG-4 AVI using a codec like DivX. On the mac, I would recommend an app called VisualHub (or ffmpegX) for doing this.

Only joking about the sig. I still don’t like the quote, but I’m not one to rain to hard down on one’s parade. I do find you’re current one much better though.

Per WMV, ignorance pretty much hits it on the head as to why it is so pervasive. But it is also ignorant to think that the audience is cognizant enough to understand that when a video doesn’t play well on their system, that they will blame themselves. Trust me, they aren’t cursing the codec when a movie fails to load, they are cursing the site and the designer. And while Flash does have a lot of traction, and has made significant progess with VP6, it still has a ways to go before it competes in terms of quality with the best that VC-1 and H.264 have to offer at the same bit rates. Heck, even a really good MPEG-4, SV3, Real 10, or WMV9 encode is better than FLV most of the time.

Yeah, well good luck with that. Unfortunately, Windows Media has a pretty large audience, and if you want to reach that audience and still deliver very high quality video, you almost have to offer it as at least an option when delivering your media to the web. You can always force people to download whatever codec or player they will need to play back your media, but that is much easier said than done.

BTW, that is quite possibly the most annoying sig ever!

Its an America is much better than your tiny little island thing. 🙂
