We’ve been using SD cards on our cameras for 4 years now and have never dropped so much as a frame. Always buys a reputable name in SD cards with the right rating and you should be fine. We then transfer footage to our edit systems, these are connected to a DROBO FS which has 5 x 3gig drives and acts as a live backup and finished productions backup.

We’ve been using the Nikon D800 for shoots and we’re very happy with its performance.

A variable ND filter. Essentially two circular filters together that screw onto the front of the lens and when turned they gradually block out more and more light. You can get the cheap ones and the expensive ones. If you’re serious, go for the latter and the former if not. You can also buy step up/down rings so the one filter can fit a number of cameras.

Steve, one last question. We’ve just got our Atomos Ninja 2’s in, does VP12 support ProRes?

I’m going to go with John on this. The Dell is excellent and the colour difference between our Dell monitors and our Samsungs is massive. If you’re grading for broadcast then go Dell. If you’re grading just for youtube then use anything you like.

Spend the extra money and go the Azden FMX-DSLR Portable Audio Mixer. Easy to set up, stays on the camera and no hassles. You’ll thank me!

We do a lot of video shoot work up in Africa and use the D800 as a nice light kit. Personally I think the Nikon D800 has more dynamic range than the Canon 5 mk3. It does have more moire though but it does allow you to record out to the Atomos Ninja. For moire we are busy investigating the Mosaic Engineering filter.

If you’re shoving a DSLR with the extra bells and whistles then not a good idea. If you like the head then buy the head. Try and get a set of legs that give you the option of using the spreader when needed.
