  • Got to say I prefer the Nikon picture (far crisper and quite cinematic at times), especially now with the D810 etc, they’ve definitely ironed out the moire and other such irritants. However, we’ve just traded in one of our D810’s for the Sony A7S and after 2 shoots with it we’re pretty blown away, the video image is breath taking though the rolling shutter is pretty dire.

I agree with Steve, go with 25p.

We’ve all suffered the all knowing, all wise, all creative client. The best thing we ever did was to fire them if they weren’t interested in anything we had to say or advise. Once you fire your first client it becomes liberating, you begin to attract the kind of client you want to work with rather than the client who wants only for you to work for them.

    Good advice Bill.

We have been very happy with the combination of the Sony fs100 and the Nikon D800. I wouldn’t suggest the EX1, nice camera (we have one) but it’s old tech and the picture quality just isn’t on the same level. Check out the D800, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

  • Use a variable ND filter on your lens.

Todd is spot on! Try to control the light coming into your camera through the ISO and aperture. Think about getting a variable ND filter. We shoot PAL with the D800 and use a shutter speed of 50, we also find we get excellent results for handheld work with a shutter speed of a 100. Obviously do the NTSC equivalent of what we do.

We’ve used Go Pro’s connected to a Landrover going through the bush and got some pretty nice stuff. The Go Pro can give some moire and artifacting problems every now and again.

A matte box is what a lot of guys use to pimp their cameras.

A variable ND filter is a must. Don’t skimp on budget. We’re using Marumi variable ND’s and they’re excellent.

The Azden FMX DSLR screws to the bottom of your DSLR and you can connect any mics you like to it.

Canon 5D markIII or the Sony NEX FS100 / 700 (and tweak the colour settings). Reckon the new 5D III will be your best option.

Have you tried resetting the camera to factory default? Have you also updated the camera to the latest firmware which is ver 2.00?
