  • My suggestion of what you need is more of a typical video camera as opposed to a DSLR. Look at getting the Panasonic AG-AC90 or the Canon XA 10. For audio get a Sennheiser wireless lapel kit (there is nothing worse than bad audio and don’t rely on the camera mic). Finally, I’d suggest you get an LED light for times when you need to put a little extra light on the lecturer. The difference in image and audio quality will be huge and should convince the powers that be that it was a worthwhile investment.

We’ve always been very happy with our Libec Tripods, they’ve taken a serious African battering and still perform fantastically.

Agree with you Jeff. Seen and heard some very good results with the Panasonic AC90. It’s a pretty impressive package for the money.

Once you start going past an ISO of 2500 is going to start looking crappy and the higher the ISO the crappier it will look. Try using a faster lens, 2.8, 1.8 etc…

    May 9, 2013 at 7:06 pm in reply to: Why shouldn’t I buy a Nikon D7000?

Hey Steve agree with most of what you have to say but must point out that Nikon D800’s video seriously kicks the ass of the Canon 5D III, just my opinionated (but unquestionable) opinion. Though you’re right on all the other points. Mike, if you want a camera for low light then you need the the new Canon 5D III, the Nikon is great until you hit the 3000 iso and above and then it all gets a little snowy. Main thing though is that all the other smaller semi pro cameras really won’t give you good low light results.

  • First up I think the 1.2 thing is over kill. When shooting video you want find the lens’ sweet spot. The canon 1.8 50mm is a great lens and you should be finding the sweet spot at around 5.6 on the aperture. Don’t get fooled into thinking that because the lens is faster it’s a superior lens. Also check out the Rokinon lenses, maybe a little plastic like but a very nice image.

  • Control the light coming into the camera by using a variable ND filter and ensure you keep your settings as suggested in your other replies. I know in the pal setting I get smoother footage with my shutter speed set to 100 than I do on 50. You have a great little camera there, enjoy it.

It’s moire alright, nothing much you can do about it except minimise your camera movement in situations like that and stick the camera on a tripod (remember though, if you start to do a pan or tilt the moire will come back).

I believe you can but all the processing and files are created in camera first so you’re not really getting top notch footage.

  • Yup it’s right. the 25p in 1080/25p means that you are shooting 25 progressive frames per second.
