I have gotten my dreamcolor to calibrate a number of times. Then this morning it was time to calibrate again so I hooked up the DVI to my mac so I could calibrate and the monitor is black. If I go into system prefs the mac is seeing the monitor but I don’t see the desktop. Tried switching the inputs to the other DVI and HDMI then back but nothing. Tried switching the power switch on the back and my mac screen goes blue for a second and comes back. However the Dreamcolor does not show the desktop. If I feed it HD video from the BMD card through the HDP2 via HDMI I can see the image. Any thoughts?
Also to make sure I am doing proper calibration steps. For working in HD I set the Dreamcolor to REC 709 color space. Then calibrate the monitor with the HP puck. Then feed it video to the HDMI input in order to get 10bit and set the AJA HDP2 to the SMPTE color range.
Thanks!

Thanks KC – Gave that a shot. Now some of the 5D footage made it and some of the RED files are not coming in or have slipped a great deal or are the wrong file altogether.
Of note on workflow is that this sequence is coming from a cut that was media managed so some of the clips have the file name with a 1 after it. Also some of the RED footage is from a RED ONE and some from EPIC. Perhaps I need to go through the cut in FCP and relink to the original transcode files then make a fresh XML?
Tried bringing files in selecting ignore file extension and it come back not finding some of the .mov files that should be R3D. All R3D files for the film are in one folder. Some of the files that don’t relink are -1 or -v files. So it looks like I should go through the cut and replace the -1 files from the consolidate!

February 2, 2012 at 9:30 pm in reply to: moviefiles: Canon 60D, audio: Canon XH-A1, HDV 50i, how to mix in FCP?you will be able to tell what type of file the audio is once it is in FCP. just look under the audio heading in the bin. Also the file name can be a dead giveaway. .mp3 aif wav etc will tell you.

Hey David
You will need to go into easy setup in FCP and select 1080p 23.98 assuming that is what you shot. Then make a new sequence, this should now be a 1080 sequence. You can check this by right clicking on the new sequence and selecting settings. This will bring up a window that will show the settings for the seq. Another way to do it is to match frame into the first clip of you current cut, make a new sequence and cut your match framed clip into the new cut and select yes when it asks you if you want to make the current seq have the same properties as the clip you are inserting. Then mark an in at the top and an out at the tail of you old cut and insert that into the new 1080 cut. Be sure to hold down the command key when you do this so it will show your edits. Your footage may be squished or distorted in some way. I find the quickest way to fix this is to match frame into each shot and relay into your new 1080 edit.
Hope this helps

Hey Mike
I have been running Hitachi 1TB drives in my 8 bay RAID 5 setup for a few years now and have had good luck with them. Running it with an Atto R380 card and get about 475 megs a sec according to the BMD speed disk app. As I am sure you know, there was a flood in Thailand where they make most of the HD’s and prices are still a bit up there compared to what they were pre flood.
I got the same drive from Tiger direct in sept for 55 bucks.

The 60D is shooting H.264 files that will not work well with FCP. You can either use compressor or another like program to transcode the files to the apple prores codec that FCP does like, and import those new files into your project. You can also download the Canon plug in to use FCP log and transfer tool to bring your footage in.

Not sure what the audio recorder format is but you want to bring your audio into FCP as 16 bit or 24 bit AIFF or WAV files that are 48k sample rate if they are not that already. You can use compressor for this as well.

February 2, 2012 at 4:52 pm in reply to: Error Out Of System Memory… can’t even import one clipRegardless of what they say, FCP does not play nice with Mpeg files. What I would do is use compressor to transcode your mp4 files to prores. Then bring the new prores files into FCP for cutting etc. Then if you need to post on the web, turn it back into mp4 with another trip through compressor.

Hi Ann- Is there any way to see what codec a clip is inside PP or would I have to open the clip in quicktime and look in the info window of the clip? Thx

Jon Thanks for the steer on Clip Wrap. Another piece of software I can’t live with out! Works like a charm.
