Just to entertain: Maybe Apple didn’t take any notes from all those editors because all they wanted was the ‘old’ FCP.

I hear your pain. It is quite different and therefor needs new thinking (at least that’s what I think)

I think you might need to think about what you actually put into the main story line. Yes the old way was to put the interview on V1 and place cutaways on tracks above. When editing the cutaways I could lock V1 so the interview stays like it is.

Now in FCPx you might have to try something different. Put the interview into a secondary story line and edit your cut aways on the main storyline. If you place this interview in the secondary storyline underneath the main story line, you get to see the talking head where you leave (or create) gabs on your main storyline.
Your way of putting clips above the main storyline is the former way of thinking in tracks. FCPx doesn’t have tracks so you have to work differently.

Now you might decide that this is not for you and nobody can call you anything. The former track based approach is still represented by all other NLE’s, so you choose which you like.

I actually like the trackless world and even though I run into problems because I’m so damned used to tracks that I start the wrong way. But this a matter of time 🙂

Another option is to actually rename the Favourite directly. Select the word ‘Favourite’ and you can actually change it to anything you like and it will pop up in a text search too (I think, not at machine right now) Also you can change to display to only display Favourites. This is actually quite powerful in general as it gives you one level more of filtering down from all to keyword selection to favorites of that keyword selection.

Of course this doesn’t solve the problem that favorites can’t overlap but I figured it’s the best way to ‘log’ interviews. Keyword for a whole continuous chunk of interview by name of talent and maybe location or whatever makes sense.
Than subdivide the keyword range by favorites and rename the Favourite (not via notes!) to give a short description of the question answered, e.g. what do you think about FCPx.

I’m not defending X, I’m simply opposing the notion that Apple destroyed livelihoods and the art of editing.

And I’m of the opinion that if you feel this way there is not much use in repeating the same argument again and again. Do something about it.

I for example had a very good and hard look at the competition and even though X is not usable yet the competitors don’t do it for me. So 7 it is for now, and if they can’t get X going I’ll take another look around.

There is absolutely nothing you can do in the FCP7 timeline that you can’t do in X. Not always the same way but that is pretty obvious, isn’t it.

Sorry but I thought your skill at telling a story was what kept your children in school and let you pay the mortgage..
And who says you need to buy a new computer or install the latest operating system right now?
Use your Steinway until it breaks down and than buy a new one. If Steinway doesn’t exists anymore when you need a new one, well yes you have to find a new company. Happened many times before and will happen again, BUT the Oscars in 1920 didn’t give awards for the machine you used nor will the Oscars in 2123 do.
And if you know that your beloved Steinway will not be available in x years time when you need a new one, and you think you’ll will not get another concert without it but only if you were able to play this Yamaha thing, get one and learn it in your spare time. Now if you’re really smart you would wait a little and see if Yamaha or the other guys (don’t know any other piano company 🙂 will make a better replacement. And who knows maybe Steinway will come good….

In the meantime:
Stop panicking everybody and stop calling it the end of the art of editing.

I think you set it to half you processors, so if you have 16 set it to 8.
Also I have set it to Quickcluster with services not Services only.
And when you submit the job you have to select you Quickcluster name instead of ‘This computer’.
No need for This computer plus as it only means that you would involve OTHER computer on your network as well (must be running Qmaster)

Same old story and nothing new. Has been said a million times in different combinations before.

If you don’t like it, don’t use it. If you don’t like Apple anymore, don’t use their products.

Do you really think Apple will magically announce that they’ll put FCPx in the bin and take FCP7 out of the draw and polish it a bit to make you guys happy?

Why do some take it so personally? Switch over prices for Premiere and Avid are very low right now.
