I figured it out. I meant to put in that I was using black magic card and it was beta, sorry for lack of details, but I knew that it was a Final Cut thing and had nothing to do with the capture card beta because this had happened a couple years ago. The All Frames was turned off for some reason and that was the issue. But thanks anyway.

    Steve and Shane,

First of all, thanks for the help. Here is exactly what we do. We shoot in a variety of formats depending on the project. We shoot on the HDX-900 and the HPX-500 at 1080i and 720p at a variety of frame rates, and the HVX-200A. We have two main things we do. One is a broadcast show that is shot with the HDX 900 and the HVX-200a on P2. It is shot in HD for archiving and other marketing uses, but delivered on Beta SP to be aired on TV. Right now I have an older Blackmagic capture card that does not down convert from HD to SD, so what I have had to do is edit the show in an SD timeline, and then lay it off to Beta SP. What I want to do is edit in HD and be able to lay off to Beta SP. Another thing we do is VNR’s on the road. We shoot on the HDX900 and the HCX500 P2 in HD because the clients want the final video in HD, but we need to down convert to Beta to deliver to news stations. We also sometimes compress the videos and email them to the stations. I hope that clears things up. Not to say I have money burning a hole in my pocket, but I am not necessarily looking for the cheapest way, just the one that will work best for my situation.

    Thanks again Steve and Shane!!

Thanks so much for the info. Most of what you say is very foreign to me, is there someplace other than asking you, that I can educate myself better on all the different formats?

I love this response. Obviously my lack of knowledge is why I am posting on this site. Not to be flip, I have also met personally with three people here in Chicago and have searched several other avenues, I don’t own a business without being thorough. Thanks Tom.

Thanks for the response. I am a producer who edits. I want to build a system, but being a producer I don’t know anything about capture cards, Graphics Cards, RAID cards etc. I just walked in and edited on a system built by an editor. I do all the post, I don’t finish elsewhere. We fully edit 2 lower budget 30:00 TV shows for broadcast. Typically we’ll capture about 4 hours of video per show. One show is shot in SD (Beta), the other is shot on Panasonic P2 HD. Both shows are being laid of to Beta tape to be delivered to the station. I want to edit the show shot on P2 in HD and then down convert it to SD, although, we have also edited the HD footage on a SD 10bit Timeline and then laid off to tape. Not sure what is the best way to do this. This will be the last year of this, next year the shows will be all HD and delivered in HD. I just need to be able to capture footage from Beta and lay shows back off to beta, and down convert HD to SD and up convert SD to HD. We also produce mid level budget marketing videos and local commercials that are shot on the Panasonic HDX 900, so we have to be able to capture that DVCPRO HD as well. The capture card I have used in the past is BlackMagic, but have not captured the DVCPRO HD on that so I don’t even know if it works. So as you can see I really don’t have a clue what I need to do in order to build a system.
