    Eric Addison,

Can you tell me more on “the hack”.
I’ve read something on writing the name of the board on a file(???)

    Eric Jurgenson,
I’m aware of the Acer’s but here the support is terrible here and “no one” on the industry moves in the Acer direction.

About the ATI, doesen’t CS5 work better with NVIDIA than with ATI?

    Thank you Eric,

    Sorry for the links.
The TOSHIBA seems to be working for me.

The HP is a dv8-1050ep (VL126EA). Please Google it.

Since you work with CS5 on a laptop, maybe you can help me on some questions.

    – I feel that less than 18″ is to small for editing with small menu letters on Premiere. What do you say?

    – I plan to get an USB 3 express card and connect 2 external usb3 HD for video. Is this to much or a good move?

    – What GPU do you have? Do you recommend the best possible, or after a certain level, I will not get any more from the system?

    Any input is welcome.
    Thank’s a lot,

    Carlos

    Thanks Vince,

I’m aware of the short duration of batteries with 2 HD, but I think I will not use the PC like that for to long.

I’m going to Canada for 6 months to a year, and need to travel a bit.
With a laptop I will take my company with me, if you know what I mean.

Most of the time I will work connected to AC.

I have 2 major concerns for this machine:

1- the size of the screen
I’ve tested some 15″ and 16″ with 1920×1080 and it’s a bit painful to me. To short letters.
So I prefer to go for a 18″

2- CS5 takes advantage of NVIDIA Cuda power.
Will these laptops really help CS5, or just the GPU on the desktop boards? – Mercury

If CS5 does not take DIRECT profit from the GPU on the laptops, maybe one with less power or even a i5 processor, will do the job.
    I’m NOT a ritch guy…

For the same amount of money I can buy a quite good desktop PC.
But moving around from one city to the other with a desktop it’s not a good idea. I think.

That’s the reason for the laptop option.

    Let me know your opinion.

    Sincerely
    Carlos

    Thanks Brian,

I’ve looked at the PC’s available in my country -Portugal- and my money limit is the Toshiba QOSMIO X500-11U
    https://pt.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Qosmio-X500-11U/1082282/toshibaShop/false/

    What’s your opinion?
Will you prefer a SONY or HP model?

I’m not a big fan on the Qosmio design, but seems that the specs are quite fine.

    Let me know.

    Thank you

    Ok.

I think I should doing this:

for SD I respect 100% the Image safety and put nothing with value outside that area.

for HD, on the NLE I’ll put the safety’s OFF and consider ALL tha image as viewable on TV’s.

    Thank’s

July 12, 2009 at 5:49 pm in reply to: New to Blackmagic – some questions

    Thanks for your post.

    -What RAID do you use/advise?

-Do you use the CineForm? Seems a great tool.

-I feel that with a i7 and a good GPU I will not need Hardware acceleration so much. Specialy if I go Cineform.

-What’s your opinion: For my kind of work (PremiereCS4 and Combustion) with Cineform from HDV should I go for a GTX295 or a Quadro CX or Quadro FX.
Are the Quadro REALLY better, or … …

I feel the same about Matrox. I (probably) never use the matrox effects.
I edit with Cut, Mix and 1 or 2 wipes.
I do some titles and a LOT of color correction.
The more elaborated effects are ALL combustion. (old School…)

    Thanks again

July 10, 2009 at 9:02 pm in reply to: New to Vegas – hardware question

    Thanks Norman,

I believe I’m in the same road as you.

I’ve used a Matrox board for a couple of years without major problems, but in these days with i7 processors and so on, I feel that the need for an expensive board is a bit… I don’t know.

Do you work with the Cineform?

    Someone can answer this:
    -imagine a scenario.
    A PC with Win 64-bit. A i7 with 6 or 12GB RAM. A GTX295 board. Premiere Pro + Combustion.

I capture in PP (with Cineform) my HDV material shoot on a Z1 camera.

I have on the timeline 3 to 5 layers of video and a couple of titles on top.

Will this timeline (with Cineform) play in real time?

What can I expect on a Top PC to achieve with Cineform, in terms of realtime/layers of HDV source material?

99% of my work is simple edit (cut, mix, some wipes).
Some letterings with alfa and F.in/ move /F.out.
A LOT of Color correction on Premiere or Combustion (almost every clip)
95% of the compositing efects are done in Combustion.

Also what board do you use / recommend?

I’m used to work with Targa3000 and it’s amazing video quality.
I’l like to have a board with minimum:
    SDI+YUV input
YUV+HDMI output (YUV for PAL SD and HDMI for HD to view on a consumer TV, NOT a 1920×1200 PC monitor)
My Sony PVM-20L4 does not have SDI for SD – YUV is good enough.

    Sincerely
    Carlos

December 12, 2008 at 3:32 pm in reply to: A new PP CS3 / CS4 editing station – some questions

    Eric,

I will book a demo to see AXIO and RT-X2 “on action”.
I’l bring we me a HDV tape from my last work and do what I’ve done on CS3 in my laptop.

I was looking carefuly to the photos and realized that the Axio board and the RT-X2 board look a like.
Seems that one is a “light” software of the other.

In a week or os I’ve come back here.

Thanks a lot for your attention.

December 9, 2008 at 12:04 pm in reply to: A new PP CS3 / CS4 editing station – some questions

    Eric, thanks for your answer.

In the present day, to buy an Axio is expensive for me.
But I’m a bit afraid of the evolution.

Right now I shoot with a Z1, and for the work I do, the camera will satisfy for a couple of years.
I do mostly corporate and some low budget commercials in SD.

But if a client comes with a format that RT-X2 does not accept ?

My main problem is with DV footage.
I’m used to work with the Targa 3000 YUV uncompressed.
On DV, color correction is always a problem.

On my last commercial, I shoot all in HDV 50i, capture on Premiere CS3 in PAL wide, edited and in the end I re-capture the HDV in MPEG.
(I have to say that I’ve had some problems with the EDL export !)

At that moment, the PPCS3 on my laptop refuse to work properly in speed terms, I mean)

I exported the 20s clip in a TIFF sequence and do the resizing and Color Correction on Combustion4 (and a 30% sharp also…)

The C4 takes a bit to render, but with the T3K I get YUV out to a PVM monitor, and get a precise picture evaluation.
The final image quality is equal or better of native DigitalBETACAM.

-Can I get this quality with a RT-X2 working with HDV source and export to SD PAL? – I want to work with the best possible picture from my Z1.

-With the RT-X2, what’s the best way ?
Import HDV natively to the timeline
    edit
export to AVI uncompressed or to Digital Betacam via YUV output???

    – Is the system frame accurate? – my T3K NEVER misses a frame

-What is the best configuration that YOU advise me to have in terms of Hardware? – It should be CS4 and 2 year “Future Proof”

    – does RT-X2 output SD in YUV and DVI out at the same time?

I’m a fan of MATROX for a couple of years.
I’ve had a RT-2500 and the system was stable and reliable since day 1.
My Targa 3000 from Pinnacle is a marvelous board, but I’m still in version 1.0 … and have to be quite careful with the machine.
T3K is a “young and delicate rose”

Sorry for all this questions, but I’m quite alone here and want to do the best option possible.

I know that you are also a Matrox user.
Can you tell me anything about BlackMagic?
    I believe I prefer Matrox.
    What’s your opinion.

    MAny thanks
    Carlos

December 6, 2007 at 9:04 pm in reply to: VERY strange behaviour !!!

    I’ve made a test.
I’ve capture 1second on DV PAL (around 3M)
Then on PP2 I’ve exported this 1s clip to another in AVI DV PAL.

This second clip is the one that has NO image on video Out on Premioere 6.5

If some one can help me and analize this last file and find what’s wrong, I’ll appreciate.

    Let me know.

    Thanks
    Carlos
