I gess I did not express myself right, I do not intend to edit on it, that would be insane, only converting AVCHD video files from SDHC cards to AppleProRes by loading SD card on an USB reader and putting APR files on an external disc. I will only use FCP to be able to convert the files by log and transfer. The process will be very slow but I don’t care it will be a back up of the SDHC cards.
None of the reasons you argue are against it. I do exactly the same when preparing to edit on my Imac, the difference is processor speed, ram memory and graphics memory. I do not need neither firewire nor thunderbolt, files can be imported and converted via USB.Imac 27 Quad 2.93, 8GB Ram, 1GB Graphics, FW800 external + Raid

Mr Biscardi is right, I switched from Macbook Pro (sata drives) to Imac 27 Quad 2.93, 8GB ram, FW800 external plus raid drives and the editing is far more faster with the FW800 drives than with sata on MBP, no need for rendering when applying corrections and effects on two video lines and the rendering is around six times faster, playing back AppleProRes files of around 14MB/s. The drive of the unit writes and reads at 80MB/s, the FW800 raid at 60, the external single FW800 at 40. Definitively much much better that my previous MBP and cheaper, not talking about a screen that lets me see now everythong I need (at 66). So far monitoring on a led TV via HDMI, not the best but thinking to switch to Matrox.

Give your clients the original files as they are in your card, card by card, separately on one folder each, if they have a quad the conversion to AppleProRes is very fast. they only have to go thru the process card by card on the hard disk.

Yes I did, the first thing I installed on the machine was FCS 3, I installed the upgrade, the system asked for the two serial numbers, the old and the upgrade and installed. By the way, what is missing definitively is Livetype from this installation, all other components of FCS are there..

Well, yes you are right, it installed, I saw it on applications and it opens, the problem is that it does not appear on the options to export from FCP, but it is installed, I’ll work on the issue of exporting.

Well I still pass with this one, nothing really new for me to pay 450 AUD for it, perphps some day we will get New DVD Studio with BluRay authoring, if Mr Apple decides it is time to satisfy the patients, sorry, the customers..

I simply blew up consecutive frames on Final Cut at different apertures and went from frame to frame continuously to see the difference on a led display.Nothing Pro, just visual experience and 40 years of doing photography, the eye is the ultimate judge. Try the slomo….

I’read a technical review wher the author states that the optimun apreture was 4.4. I made som trials stating at f11 and endid up at 4.4. I blew up the image up to 8x and found that really resolution is lost over 5.6, being mor noticeable at f11, together with contrats lost. I have been working so far at f5.6 and the image looks great all the time, wheter with sun or on open shade.
Another problem is shutter, I’ve not been able to do a decent slomo to 50 or 30% with any shutter speed from 50 to 200. Using the device on the camera to record at 215fps is a piece of crap, at 3 secs the image is only worth if you use it at 1/4 of the screen size. -
Sorry folks, I was reading a complete different set of files, it’s working fine, age does not forgive……….
