Agreed, the Java prefs can ruin you. I’m ready for the world to be 64bit all through.
Also, try your copy on another machine for a test. (you can even import with the unlicensed demo although you can’t save, it’s good for a quick test.) I’ve pulled over 4,000 stills into a catalog at once with no problems, (I’ve heard of over 10,000 item catalogs from Kevin) but know that like all apps, CatDV is bound by the quality of the data. Beware of corruption and always check another directory to make sure you’re crash isn’t based on your data. I’ve had tons of issues with bad file and clip names in FCP for instance.

If I may ask, where are you putting the html? If you are serving it, then you can style it with CSS and get whatever look you like.
If you’re printing directly from the app, I’m not sure that there’s anyway to change the default look. Perhaps the dev guys can speak to that.

It’s up and running. I’ll buzz you offline and give you a look at it.
The realities of the product are this – (Matt, can you check my info here, I know it changes a lot)
$5,000 for 5 concurrent seats (5 connections at a time)
$200 per user after that, again based on simultaneous connections
You still need custom integration to manage the exposed fields. User customization is planned in the near future.
Proxy is protected by the server meaning that proxy can live on another web server but it’s passed through the web client so folks can’t just go download your proxy at will.
It’s mainly aimed at large shops who need interactive access to clips for approvals and other uses. Compared to the “big iron” systems it replaces, or custom web dev, it’s cheap, but I know it may not seem that way for a small shop.
The only other way to deal with this is to have a web based system but then you don’t get to manage your metadata from CatDV in house. You can make your own web CMS, but then you have to find some way to bring that data back in and out of catdv. (hard and $$$) One point of management is where the web client is cool. If you update CatDV in house, the web client obviously changes, (html publisher can do that) BUT.. when someone from out of house can add or change metadata, that’s when things get nice.
If you have a need for worldwide access to your media and metadata, there’s nothing like this. But I find that for a lot of folks, the HTML Publisher will serve clips for review etc. I’m preparing some new demos of that app as well so keep an eye out for them.
Also, the web client is constantly being updated to be a more user friendly integration but remember, you’ll always need a fast pipe to serve those proxies, one way or another.

To answer the naming thing, that’s a Cache-A ID for now. Maybe one of their guys can speak to that.
As far as tracking other tapes, if it’s a tapeless camera, you can make the older LTO the “tape” in CatDV.
If it’s already got a video tape and an LTO, you could manually add them to the db by creating an “alternate LTO” field to deal with the old stuff. That way, as you restored from the old and moved media to your slick new Cache-A, you could manage both.

I have to say that Thursday morning it was nice to find that plaque at the booth.
It vindicates a lot of what I’ve been saying for a few years now. Great to see you guys there and Bob, I knew you’d “get it” and it’ll live nicely on that Final Share.
Mark, you exactly hit it on the head. It’s a set of tools to solve production problems. We usually install it for one use and then people take it and apply it all over their shop.
The UK folks have brought this thing a long way since I put it on Celeb Rehab, we’ve now got tools to run an enterprise.
Again, really great to put faces to the names and “handles” on here.

It really depends on your business, of course, but the biggest things to me are that CatDV will allow you to bulk tag as many items as you can select, meaning that FCS wants you to apply metadata to a single asset at a time. In most productions, we know certain general things about an asset and would like to quickly tag them at once.
In CatDV I can tag 1,000 assets with a common project name, for instance. In FCS, I am limited to one at a time. Also, the search results have an upper limit (I believe 20 per page and no more than 10 pages of results or 200 items) That doesn’t work well for a lot of archives.
CatDV also can work on a laptop in the field, not connected to the server for managing field shoots and pre logging footage and you can then publish those catalogs into the server when you return home.
Also, you can take our proxy files on a firewire drive and send a producer home or somewhere else to work. Our proxies can be duplicated and can also live in multiple locations, unlike FCS.

Just noticed a note in a release note for the upcoming version that there are some fixes to media file handling when loading an FCP XML file.
This may relate to what you’re seeing.
