That workflow works, with limitations.
The way you’re doing it is fine as long as the proxy and catalogs are on a shared folder that all machines can access.
The limitations are search and management. You won’t be able to search across catalogs, (admittedly, not the end of the world in a small shop)
The management is a little trickier so I mention it as a caveat.
If someone drags a clip into multiple catalogs, you won’t be able to easily figure that out or search for duplicates, so know that you may end up with mixed metadata. Mostly it’s a problem when two people add metadata to two versions of the same clip without knowing that the other exists. The metadata is only applied tot the one, obviously.
Be careful of that and you can create, and view catalogs and proxy and then publish them straight up to the Server when you upgrade.
I would also match your versions as far as pro and not pro. The data can be damaged and also the features you will be missing will likely bum out your users. In addition, your upgrade path will be simpler from Pro to Server. No sense wasting money.
Also one more thought, once you are familiar and have some catalogs created, maybe get someone to set up a demo of server in your shop so you can see the package work as it’s truly meant to work, so you and your users don’t give up before you see it all work as designed.

Scott, you can absolutely do that. Drag the selected files that are going to the LTO into CatDV, then use a field to enter the archive name.
If you have Server, you can actually search across all your archives. If you only have a standalone copy, then you’ll likely need to have one catalog per archive since standalone only searches within one catalog.
The slick way to do this is to use the Cache-A LTO device.

Check that post. CatDV actually moves the files to the LTO and auto tracks when where they went.
Don’t buy a drive until you see that.

Not to my knowledge, but I’d like to ask about how possible it is. There’s actually a use for it in shortening clips as well. (too long to go into here, but Avid users could use the shortening version of what you are describing.)

hey man,
It’s a little weird, but if you click the triangle open in the final cut lower panel, you will see all your projects and you can drag to a specific one of them. You are probably dragging into a different project than the one you are working on.
As to the transcode, that, by it’s nature, creates a new piece of media, which would be a new clip. There are several ways to handle this, including an option to “receive proxy first” But that concept is beyond a simple post here, but I’ve been using it to deal with Canon footage. The gist is, bring in the h.264 as your “proxy” and then after you transcode to pro res, make that the hi res, “movie”. It’s a great way to deal with this.
As far as tapeless goes, the rule seems to be, “drives are cheap”. Most places, we just transcode it all and deal with it that way. Obviously for a smaller shop this may not make sense but in the end, when you’re editing, it’s best to have all the footage available so we just transcode up front so we are never waiting on footage.

Hey Bob,
This was in the “multi” fields where the system is putting in the separators between multiple keywords out of the pull down list. You just don’t want silly humans typing in a different separator than the system. That’s what caused all of this, mixing separators which is bad for database systems.
There are no bad questions, I have a few I need to ask right now too. lol

Kevin, is right on, it sprinkled the lights across the bar, which is nice when you’re running it on a server lol.
I have some long clips now to see if that makes a difference as well.

For reference, (and to satisfy my curiosity) I just dropped 16,000 stills into my CatDV 8.1.1 running on OSX 10.5.8 on a macbook, yeah, the little white one, with my ram allocation set to 800MB.
I got to 2112 jpg stills before I got an out of memory error but the app didn’t crash, I could still save and then go back to importing. That’s on the little laptop.
You can tell I’m just hanging out watching TV today, right? 😉 Hope you get it sorted over there.
